2 Chronicles 35:12
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as [it is] written in the book of Moses. And so [did they] with the oxen.
To offer unto the Lord. — The burntofferings were wholly consumed on the altar; the skin and dung were "burnt without the camp." Hebrews 13:12 Hereby was signified, (1.) Christ’s ardent love and zeal towards his people; (2.) His bitter passion in the whole man.
Nehemiah 13:23
In those days also saw I Jews [that] had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, [and] of Moab:
In those days saw I Jews — Outwardly, at least (as the apostle distinguishes, Romans 2:28 ), and that also was then a prerogative, Romans 3:1 , and shall appear to be so again, when their long looked for conversion day is come, Romans 11:26 .
That had married wives of Ashdod — Outlandish wives, and of another religion; and with these they cohabited, as the Hebrew word here importeth.
Psalms 119:10
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
With my whole heart have I sought thee — And that of a child little, being nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, 1 Timothy 4:6 . I did all the wills of God, and so became a man after his own heart, Acts 13:22 .
O let me not wander — As I shall surely, if thou but withdraw thy grace; for I subsist merely by thy manutension.
Psalms 145:19
He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
He will fulfil the desire, … — Or, the will, the pleasure, Beneplacitum. Hence that bold request of Luther, Fiat voluntas mea, let my will be done. But then he addeth, Mea, Domine, quia tua, My will, because thine, and no otherwise. They that do the will of God shall have their own will of God. See 1 John 3:22 . The king can deny you nothing.
Psalms 28:6
Blessed [be] the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.
Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard, … — God will one day turn the prayers of his people into praises. David, Psalms 28:1 , had said, Be not silent to me; here, Blessed be God, for he hath answered me. So Jehoshaphat had his Baca soon turned into Berachah, 2 Chronicles 20:18-19 . See David’s syllogism; and mark his conclusion, Psalms 66:18-20 , not according to the rules of logic, but better.
Psalms 75:5
Lift not up your horn on high: speak [not with] a stiff neck.
Lift not up your horn on high — Against the high God; so Tremellius rendereth it.
Speak not with a stiff neck — Some render it, with an old neck; let old things pass, and now speak with a new and humble throat. Hard words and stout speeches, uttered from a mind vehemently moved out of its place (as the word here used importeth), shall be one day dearly answered for, Judges 1:15 .
Proverbs 20:7 just [man] walketh in his integrity: his children [are] blessed after him.
The just man walketh in his integrity. — Walketh constantly; Continenter ambulat. not for a step or two only, when the good fit is upon him. See Trapp on " Genesis 17:1 "
His children are blessed after him. — Personal goodness is profitable to posterity; yet not of merit, but of free grace, and for the promise’ sake; which Jehu’s children found and felt to the fourth generation, though himself
Proverbs 24:27 house.
Prepare thy work without, … — God would have all his to be not good men only, but good husbands too; to order their affairs with discretion, and to take their fittest opportunities for despatch of household businesses. Pliny Lib, xviii, cap. 1. hath a saying to like sense with this: Aedificandum, saith he, consito agro, et tunc quoque cunctanter, - Let building alone till thy field be tilled, vined, planted, …
Proverbs 29:17
Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest. — He will grow so towardly, that thou shalt with less ado rule him when grown up; or at least, thou shalt have peace within, in that thou hast used God’s means to mend him.
Yea, he shall give delight. — See Proverbs 10:1 . The often urging this nurturing of children, shows that it is a most necessary, but much neglected duty.
Proverbs 31:15 riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She riseth also while it is yet night. — That is, Betime in the morning - "a great while before day," as our Saviour also did to pray. Mark 1:35
And a portion to her maids. — She neither pines nor pampers them, but allows them that which is sufficient. Three things, saith Aristotle, a man owes to his servants: work, meat, and correction, - εργα, τροφην
Proverbs 4:20
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
My son, attend to my words. — Still he calls for attention, as knowing our dulness and fickle headedness. It fared with the prophet Zechariah as with a drowsy person, who, though awaked and set to work, is ready to sleep at it. Zechariah 4:1 It fares with many of us as with little children, who, though saying their lessons, yet must needs look off to see the feather that flies by them.
Isaiah 13:20 contermini. or vagrant shepherds of the Arabian Desert, that oft flitted for better pasture, shall shun Babylon as haunted with wild beasts, or rather with dragons and devils in the Revelation; all this is applied to, and shall be verified of, Rome. Isaiah 18:1-7
Isaiah 33:22
For the LORD [is] our judge, the LORD [is] our lawgiver, the LORD [is] our king; he will save us.
For the Lord is our judge. — Ours in all relations, therefore we shall not die or do amiss. See Habakkuk 1:12 , with the note. Our Judge will do us right; our Lawgiver will give us the best direction. See Nehemiah 9:13 , with the note. Our King will see to our safety: "Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King." Psalms 149:2
Isaiah 35:9
No lion shall be there, nor [any] ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk [there]:
No lion shall be there. — The devil, that roaring lion, nor his actuaries, tyrants and heretics, shall haunt these holy highways. God will preserve his people from all devoratory evils, as Tertullian calleth them, 2 Thessalonians 3:3 "that wicked one, the devil, shall not once touch them," 1 John 5:18 so as to thrust his deadly sting into them.
Isaiah 63:19
We are [thine]: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
We are thine. — And shouldst thou then deal with us as some profane, idolatrous nation? See here the holy boldness of faith standing upon interrogatories, 1 Peter 3:21 and filling her mouth with arguments of all sorts.
Thou never barest rule over them. — No such reason or relation is there of children, servants, subjects, wherefore they should thus be favoured and we disowned. Amos 3:2 Isaiah 63:17
Isaiah 7:7
Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.
It shall not stand. — The counsel of the Lord, that shall stand Psalms 33:11 when the world’s wizards shall be taken in their own craftiness. 1 Corinthians 3:19
It shall not be. — All their projects are dashed by a word. Video, rideo, saith he that sitteth in heaven, Psalms 2:4 I look and laugh; and wherein they dealt proudly, I am above them. Exodus 18:11
Jeremiah 16:21
Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name [is] The LORD.
I will for this once. — And "this once" shall stand for all. Affliction shall not rise up the second time. Nahum 1:9
And I will make them to know. — Effectu magis quam affectu. Effecting more than affecting.
My hand and my might, — i.e., My mighty hand, mine irresistible power in their just punishment.
Jeremiah 31:28
And it shall come to pass, [that] like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.
Like as I have watched over them. — I have been sedulous and assiduous.
To pluck up and break down, … — See Jeremiah 1:10-11 ; Jeremiah 10:12 ; Jeremiah 18:7 .
So I will watch. — I will make them a plentiful amends.
Jeremiah 46:14
Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.
Publish in Noph, and in Tahpanhes. — See Jeremiah 44:1 .
For the sword shall devour roundabout thee. — Egypt was no whit amended by the former discomfiture at Carchemish; therefore is now wholly subdued by the Babylonian conqueror, about three and twenty years after. And the like befell the Greek
Jeremiah 9:21
For death is come up into our windows, [and] is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, [and] the young men from the streets.
For death is come up into our windows, — i.e., The killing Chaldees break in upon us at any place of entrance, doors or windows. Joel 2:9 John 10:1 The ancients give us warning here to see to our senses - those windows of wickedness - that sin get not into the soul thereby, and death by sin.
