Jeremiah 36:9
And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, [that] they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.
They proclaimed a fast. — Haply for fear of the Chaldeans, who, having lately beaten Pharaohnecho, was like enough to invade Judea; or else, because of that great dearth. Jeremiah 14:1-2 ; Jeremiah 14:12 ; Jeremiah 36:6
Ezekiel 1:12
And they went every one straight forward: whither the spirit was to go, they went; [and] they turned not when they went.
And they went every one straight forward. — See on Ezekiel 1:9 .
Whither the Spirit was to go, they went. — That is, the Spirit of God, by whose direction and conduct the angels do all things; he is the great agent that setteth angels to work. Let us also be "led by the Spirit of God," so shall we approve ourselves "sons of God." Romans 8:14
Ezekiel 10:12
And their whole body, and their backs, and their hands, and their wings, and the wheels, [were] full of eyes round about, [even] the wheels that they four had.
And the whole body, — viz., Of the cherubims. as Ezekiel 1:19-21 The wheels are said to be full of eyes. God, who overruleth all, is ολοφθαλμος , All eye. His providence is like a well drawn picture, which vieweth all that are in the room. Omnia
Ezekiel 15:3
Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? or will [men] take a pin of it to hang any vessel thereon?
Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? — No, hardly. It is good for nothing; no, not so much as to make a pin or a peg of to hang a hat or bridle on, because it is a sappy and brittle wood. Think the same of that empty vine, the profligate professor, being abominable, disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Titus 1:16
Ezekiel 34:26
And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing.
And I will make them a blessing. — By blessing them with all spiritual benedictions in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 1:3 so that they shall be felices et faecundi, happy and fruitful.
There shall be showers of blessing. — Or, Very large showers 2 Corinthians 9:6 of divine doctrine, Isaiah 55:9 and of righteousness. Hosea 10:12
Ezekiel 39:25 Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
Now will I bring again. — Three things he here promiseth his people, notwithstanding all the sorrow, (1.) Effectual vocation; (2.) Justification here; (3.) Glorification. Ezekiel 39:29 The Sun of righteousness loves not to set in a cloud.
And will be jealous. — Or, Zealous; "the zeal of the Lord of hosts," his free grace, "shall effect
Ezekiel 44:6
And thou shalt say to the rebellious, [even] to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O ye house of Israel, let it suffice you of all your abominations,
And thou shalt say to the rebellious. — Heb., To rebellion. Vulgate, To the exasperating house.
Let it suffice you. — Ye have sinned enough, and more than enough. 1 Peter 4:3 Now that I have set you up a new temple, turn over a new leaf for shame; as Ezekiel 43:10 when shall it once be? Jeremiah 13:27
Ezekiel 46:19 sacred - viz., to show where the priests should boil and bake.
Into the holy chambers of the priests. — These holy cells or chambers are particular Christian churches, committed to the care of Christ’s faithful ministers Polan. Acts 20:28 1 Peter 5:2
Ezekiel 7:14 Saxons and Piers in that Victoria Halleluiatica, the Germans against the Hussites in Bohemia, …), and struck them with a panic terror, with utter despondency, so that they were feeble and fainthearted, and the strong were become as tow. Isaiah 1:31
Daniel 2:2 dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
Then the king commanded to call the magicians. — These had Ham for their founder, saith Pintus; but who can tell that? Daniel haply was forgotten by Nebuchadnezzar, as David had sometime been by Saul. 1 Samuel 17:55-56 A sweet providence it was that he was not called among the magicians. God will not have his matched or mingled with wicked ones.
Matthew 22:10
So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
Both bad and good, … — Such a mixture there ever hath been, and will be here in the Church. Doeg sets his foot as far within the sanctuary as David. There are sacrificing Sodomites, Isaiah 1:10 , sinners in Sion, Isaiah 33:14 . We cannot avoid the company of those from whom we shall be sure to carry guilt or grief.
Matthew 24:40 manner; but at Christ’s coming there shall be found a considerable company of such as shall be saved. He shall separate his saints with a wonderful separation, and make himself to be "admired in all them that believe," 2 Thessalonians 1:10 . How carefully, then, should we work out our salvation, and ensure to ourselves our election by good works.
Mark 16:1
And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.
And when the sabbath was past — As God on the first day of the week drew the world out of that abhorred estate of nothing, and brought light out of darkness, so did Christ, on that day, draw his people out of an estate worse than nothing, and "brought life and immortality to light by the gospel," 2 Timothy 1:10 .
Luke 2:4
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
And Joseph also went up — By a special providence of God, as is above noted, Luke 2:1 , and not only so, but that the holy virgin might still have with her the keeper and cover of her virginity; that the devil might not have occasion to raise up false reports about her great belly.
Luke 6:1 second sabbath after the first was. Nazianzen answered, I’ll tell you that when I come next into the pulpit, for there you cannot contradict me. Ita per iocum dixit (saith Melancthon) quod hodie serio multi imitantur. See Trapp on " Matthew 12:1 "
Luke 7:38
And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
To wash his feet — They that make their eyes a fountain to wash Christ’s feet in, shall have his side for a fountain to wash their souls in.
Kissed his feet — But how many now refuse those kisses of his mouth, Song of Solomon 1:2 , by despising the word preached, that sweet pledge of his love!
John 4:10 thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
The gift of God — That is, Christ himself, called by St Paul the benefit, ευεργεσια , 1 Timothy 6:2 . Let him not be to us as Jether’s sword to him, which he drew not, used not; but as Goliath’s sword to David, none to that. None but Christ, none but Christ, said that martyr.
John 5:38
And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
And you have not his word abiding in you — As an "engrafted word," James 1:21: ye have heard it, but with your bodily ears only, with those gristles that grow upon your heads: ye have not drawn up the ears of your minds to the ears of your bodies, that one sound piercing both, ye might believe; ye have not mixed the word with faith in your hearts, as in a vessel, …
John 6:17
And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
Jesus was not come to them — This was worse to them than the storm. It was woeful with Saul when the Philistines were upon him, and God would not come at him, nor answer him, 1 Samuel 28:15 . So when danger or death is upon a man, and God is far from him. That doom, "I will not show you favour," Jeremiah 16:13 , was worse than their captivity.
John 6:59 the synagogue — In a set sermon, and yet to little purpose; for many made defection. Vultures unguento fugantur, et scarabei rosa, Vultures are put to flight by perfumes and the rose bettle, say Pliny and Aelian. Aelian, On Animals, l. 3. c. 7. 1:165 When we have spent all our wind on our people, their hearts will be still apt to be carried away with every wind of cantrary doctrine or satanical suggestion.
