Isaiah 65:1 called by my name.
I am sought of them that asked not for me. — I am sought - that is, I am found, Piscat. as Ecclesiastes 3:6 or, I am sought to by those that asked not of me - viz., by the Gentiles, who knew me not, inquired not of me. See Romans 10:20-21 , where the apostle, than whom we cannot have a better interpreter, expoundeth this verse of the calling of the Gentiles, and the next verse, of the rejection of the Jews. And herein "Esaias was very bold," saith St Paul; so bold, say
Ezekiel 5:1
And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber’s razor, and cause [it] to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard: then take thee balances to weigh, and divide the [hair].
And thou, son of man. — See on Ezekiel 2:1 .
Take thee a sharp knife. — This was the King of Babylon. as Isaiah 7:20 The Turk is at this day such another. Mohammed I was, in his time, the death of 800,000 men. Selymus II, in revenge of the loss received at Lepanto, would have put to death
Daniel 12:3 others to salvation, as all wise ones will; for goodness is diffusive of itself, and would have others to share with it. Charity is no churl.
Shall shine as the brightness of the firmament. — A good amends for their present sufferings. Daniel 11:33 Romans 8:18 Solomon allowed little or no considerable reward to his workmen, Song of Solomon 8:12 but Christ doth. For they shall shine as the firmament; yea, as the stars; yea, as the sun in his strength; Matthew 13:43 yea, as Christ himself shineth,
Daniel 3:26 most high God, come forth, and come [hither]. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
Ye servants of the most high God. — This was a high title, such as David and other great princes have gloried in; Psalms 36:1 title See Trapp on " Psalms 36:1 " The devil gave it to Paul and his fellow labourers; Acts 16:17 and they who deny it to Christ’s faithful ministers, loading them with names of scorn and obloquy, show therein less ingenuity than the
Hosea 10:9 Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.
O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah — Or, prae diebus, worse than in the days of Gibeah. What those days were, see Hosea 9:9 Judges 19:15: when they were is not so certain; but probably before the time of the Judges, and soon after Joshua’s death; for Jebus, or Jerusalem, was not yet taken, Judges 19:11-12 cf. Hosea 1:1 , and Phineas was yet alive and ministered before the Lord,
Amos 3:5 carried here by blind fortune, and not by a particular providence, as if
“ mundo nullus inesset
Rector, et incerto fluerent mortalia casu? ”
Will you say of the evils you have suffered, in the language of Ashdod, "It is a chance?" 1 Samuel 6:9 . Is that heathen idol fortune anything in the world, 1 Corinthians 10:19 , more than a blasphemy, spued out by the devil against the Divine providence? Can a sparrow fall to the ground, or any the least bird into a snare upon the earth,
Amos 3:8 roar upon his servants and say, as to Jeremiah he once did, "Thou therefore, gird up the loins of thy mind, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them," Jeremiah 1:17 . We must roar against men’s sins, and be instant, though they roar against us for so doing, and threaten never so much. Micaiah will not budge for a king’s authority when once he had seen the Lord in his majesty; nor Paul for an angel’s,
Amos 6:14 means to take you a link lower, and to stain the glory of your pride. I tell you not what a nation it is, that you may imagine the worst; but you will find their quiver is an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men, and no less merciless, Jeremiah 5:16-17 .
And they shall afflict you (or crush you) from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of the wilderness — From one end of your land to the other; that as ye have filled it from corner to corner with your uncleannesses, Ezra 9:11 , so there
Amos 7:1 should befall this people, to whom Amos is again sent, as Ahijah was to Jeroboam’s wife, with heavy tidings, and as Ezekiel was afterwards to his rebellious countrymen, with a roll written full of lamentations, and mourning, and woe, Ezekiel 2:10 .
And, behold, he formed grasshoppers — Or, locusts, forerunners of famine, Joel 1:4 , See Trapp on " Joel 1:4 " or (as some will), of the Assyrians, whom the Divine justice made a scorpion to Israel, as Israel had been a scourge to
Nahum 1:6 cannon shot. There is no standing before a lion, much less before a devouring fire, least of all before an angry God. When our Saviour did but put forth a beam of his Deity, and said, "I am he," the stout soldiers fell to the ground, John 18:6 , and there they had lain if he had not licensed them to rise again. Quid autem iudicaturus faciet, qui iudicandus hoc fecit? (Augustin.) The wicked shall not stand in judgment, saith David, Psalms 1:5 .
Who can abide in the fierceness of his anger?
Habakkuk 2:14 pleading the cause of his oppressed people (whom he seemed, during their captivity there, to neglect), that men shall have cause to say, "Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth," Psalms 58:11 .
As the waters cover the sea — The channel of the sea; that is, plentifully and abundantly; see a like promise Isaiah 11:9 , but to another purpose. That is a famous promise of the coming and kingdom of Christ; and so some interpreters apply
Zechariah 1:7 not God’s manner of dealing with those that tremble at his word, and humble at his feet. Deiecit ut relevet, premit ut solatia praestet. He comforteth those that are cast down, 2 Corinthians 7:6 , commandeth others to comfort the feebleminded, 1 Thessalonians 5:14 , and noteth those that do not with a black-coal, Job 6:14 , Nigro carbone notari. See the workings of his bowels, the rollings of his compassions, kindled into repentance toward his penitentiaries, Jeremiah 31:20 Hosea 11:8 Isaiah
Matthew 20:30 heard that Jesus passed by — Happy it was for them that, though blind, yet they were not deaf. For as death came in by the ear, so doth life. "Hear, and your soul shall live," Isaiah 55:3 ; a heavy ear is a singular judgment, Isaiah 6:11 ; a hearing ear a special favour, Proverbs 20:12 . When God struck Zacharias,Luke 1:22; Luke 1:22 , he made him dumb, but not deaf. When God struck Saul, he made him blind but not deaf. When God struck Mephibosheth, he made him lame, but not deaf.
Matthew 3:13 the valley of Baca,"Psalms 84:6; Psalms 84:6 , from strength to strength, to see the face of God in Sion, though but in that dark glass of the ceremonies. And in Daniel’s time they ran to and fro "to increase knowledge," Daniel 12:4 . In Zechariah’s days the inhabitants of one city went to another, saying, "Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts: I will go also," Zechariah 8:21 . Our Saviour took it ill that men came not as
Matthew 9:22 her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
But Jesus turned him about — To take notice of it himself, and to notify it to others. For these reasons, saith Chrysostom: 1. To free the woman from fear, lest her conscience should call her recreant, as one that had stole a cure. 2. To make up in her what was wanting to her faith, if she should have any such thought to do Song of Solomon 3:1-11 . To manifest her faith, for
John 1:1 atheist, a true Christian, as learned Junius was. Funccius ia Vita Sua, Operib. praefix. But he only admired it, and so left it where he found it; as too many do the Word at this day.
Was the Word — Personal, and enunciative. Isaiah, Isaiah 6:1 , saw him on the throne, and heard him speaking; Daniel, Daniel 8:13 , calleth him Palmoni hammedabber, " that excellent speaker," and asketh him of the vision; the Syriac interpreter here calleth him Meltha, " the Word uttered;"
John 17:1 public prayer, as if they would leave them on the roof of the church; when all is but histrionical, theatrical, counterfeit, προς το θεα θηναι , to be seen of men,Matthew 6:1; Matthew 6:1 . The eagle, when she soareth highest, have ever an eye to the prey below; so hath the hypocrite to profit, credit.
The hour is come — q.d. I ask not before the time is come, I am ripe and ready for thy kingdom. Some would be in heaven
John 19:6 and those were the last that suffered for religion in Queen Mary’s reign.
I find no fault in him — No wonder! For he was (as Peter saith) "A lamb without blemish" (of original sin), "and without spot" (of actual sin), 1 Peter 1:18 . Neither was it without a sweet providence of God that he should be so often absolved from the desert of death, that thereby we might escape the manifold deaths that we had so well deserved.
John 9:40 were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Are we blind also? — Yes, none more: for who so blind as he that will not see? "Who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the Lord’s servant?" Isaiah 42:19 ; "Thou blind Pharisee," saith our Saviour, Matthew 23:26 ; and again, "Ye blind guides," Matthew 23:24 ; and "Ye fools and blind," often in that chapter. And yet these passed in those days for the only wise men were (1
