Romans 2:29
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Which is one inwardly — An Israelite indeed, John 1:47 , that hath put away the foreskin of his heart, Jeremiah 4:4 . That worshippeth God in spirit, rejoiceth in Christ Jesus, and hath no confidence in the flesh, Philippians 3:3 .
Whose praise is not — He seeks not the applause of men, but God’s
Romans 9:4 covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God , and the promises;
The adoption — For Israel was God’s firstborn, and so "higher than the kings of the earth," Psalms 89:27 .
And the glory — The ark of the covenant, 1 Samuel 4:21 , whence Judea is called "the glorious land," Daniel 11:41 . As for the ark, it is elsewhere called God’s face, Psalms 105:4 . Yea, God himself, Psalms 132:5 .
The covenants — The moral law in two tables.
The giving
1 Corinthians 10:11
Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
For our admonition — God hangs up some, as it were, in gibbets, for public example. See 1 Corinthians 10:6 . Let us therefore set a memorandum upon God’s punishments; and mark his spits with our stars. Let us be wise by other men’s woes; take a pearl out of the serpent, a good stone out of the toad’s head, suck sweet honey
1 Corinthians 5:13 εξαρειτε , Ye will put away, q.d. I hope ye will, though hitherto ye have not. Soft words and hard arguments do soonest prevail, especially when we reprove or admonish not in our own, but in God’s words, as here the apostle doth out of Deuteronomy 13:1-5 . Some warmth must be in a reproof, but it must not be scalding hot. Aegros, quos potus fortis non curavit, ad salutem pristinam aqua tepens revocavit, saith Gregory. They that could not be cured with strong potions, have been recovered with warm
2 Corinthians 10:4 nihil loquuntur, as Jerome hath it.
But mighty through God — Note here the apostle’s modesty. Not we, saith he, but our weapons are mighty; and not through us that wield them, but through God that works by and with them. See Trapp on " 1 Corinthians 15:10 "
To the pulling down of strong holds — Forts, munitions, trenches, cages of foul spirits inhabiting men’s hearts.
2 Corinthians 7:6 are forsaken of their hopes. He will not crush but cherish that worm Jacob. "He will not break the bruised reed," …
By the coming of Titus — Who came very opportunely, even while Paul was writing this Epistle, 2 Corinthians 2:12-13 . God’s comforts are therefore sweet because seasonable. He never comes too soon, nor stays too long. He waits to be gracious, as being a God of judgment, Isaiah 30:18 . Were we but ripe, he is ready, and will lift us up in due time, 1 Peter
Galatians 3:19 was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Because of transgressions — Which are discovered by the law. Sight of misery must go before sense of mercy. Lex, lux, the law is a light (saith Solomon), which lays all open, as 1 Corinthians 14:25 , and threateneth destruction to transgressors.
And it was ordained, … — Therefore it is not to be disrespected, though we cannot attain eternal life by it.
In the hand of a mediator — That is, of Moses, who was
Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
The fruit of the Spirit — The spirit of grace are those two golden pipes, Zechariah 4:12 , through which the two olive branches empty out of themselves the golden oils of all precious graces into the candlestick, the Church. Hence grace is here and elsewhere called the fruits of the Spirit, pleasant fruits, Song of Solomon 4:16 ; Song
Ephesians 5:14 saith. See the like, James 4:6 ; "But he giveth (or the Scripture giveth) more grace." It convinceth not only, but converteth; it discovereth not only, but cureth corrupt hearts. These waters of the sanctuary are healing, Isaiah 9:2 ; Isaiah 26:19 ; Isaiah 60:1 . Some there are that interpret this "he" of our Saviour Christ, and take this saying for a sentence of his; such as was that,Acts 20:35; Acts 20:35 . Others read, Therefore the light saith, …
Awake, thou that sleepest
1 Timothy 4:14 disuse or misuse; and God hearing gives them the wings of an eagle; so that such may say as once Zedekiah did, "When went the Spirit of the Lord from me to thee?" God dries up the arm and darkens the eye of idle and idol shepherds, Zechariah 11:17 .
With the laying on of the hands — A custom that came from the Church of the Old Testament,Genesis 8:14; Genesis 8:14 ; Leviticus 1:4 ; Leviticus 3:2 , is laudably used to this day in the ordination of ministers, but foolishly and sinfully
1 Timothy 4:16 doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
Thou shalt both save — What a high honour is this to faithful ministers, that they should be styled saviours in a sense! So Job 33:24 ; Obadiah 1:21 James 5:20 . Only it must be their care to save themselves as well as their hearers; and that it be not said of them, as once it was of Laertes, the father of Ulysses, that he ordered all things well, but neglected himself. One desired a bad-living
Hebrews 10:26 utterly despaired. Others of the ancients have unworthily cashiered this Epistle out of the canon, because of this passage.
There remaineth no more sacrifice — For sins against the law, though against knowledge there was an atonement, Leviticus 6:1 , though it were for perjury; but for this sin against the gospel, that repudiates the remedy, there is no sacrifice; abused mercy turns into fury.
1 Peter 1:18 as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
Ye were not redeemed with silver and gold — These are poor things to purchase a soul with (more likely they are to drown it in perdition and destruction, 1 Timothy 6:9 ). Our Saviour, who only ever went to the price of souls, tells us that one soul is more worth than a world, Matthew 16:26 .
Received by tradition — Children are very apt to follow their parents’ example, whether of good or evil.
1 John 4:12 Either actively; our love is demonstrated in the excellency of it. Or else passively; the love that God beareth to us is abundantly declared perfect, in that he worketh such a gracious inclination in us. And in this latter sense understand the apostle, 1 John 4:17 , touching love made perfect.
1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.
Because he first loved us — See Trapp on " 1 John 4:10 " Mary answers not Rabboni till Christ first said unto her, Mary. Our love is but the reflex of his. And as the reflected beams of the sun are weaker than the direct, so are our affections weaker than God’s. That is a memorable
Revelation 14:5
And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.
And in their mouth — Children they are that will not lie,Isaiah 63:8; Isaiah 63:8 , neither is a deceitful tongue found in their mouth, Zephaniah 3:13 . They will rather die than lie. The officers of Merindol answered the bishop that moved them to abjure, that they marvelled much that he would go about to persuade them to lie to God and the world; affirming that they punished their children very
