Genesis 1:29 upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Behold, I have given you. — By this "behold," God stirs up them and us to confidence, thankfulness, Psalms 16:1-11 and obedience to so liberal a Lord, so bountiful a benefactor. And surely as iron put into the fire seems to be nothing but fire, so Adam, thus beloved of God, was turned into a lump of love, and bethinks himself what to do by way of retribution.
Genesis 12:12
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This [is] his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
Therefore it shall come to pass, … — Note here, saith Pererius, 1. The raging affection of the Egyptians, that made no conscience of murder to enjoy their lust; 2. Their blindness, that made less account of murder than adultery. Note again, saith Piscator, that beauty exposeth a body to the danger of dishonesty, and
Genesis 21:8 πασαν ημεραν εορτην ηγειται - Diog. ap. Plutarch. "Let us keep the festivity, εωρταζωμεν 1 Corinthians 5:7 or holy day," saith Paul, that "feast of fat things full of marrow; of wines on the lees well refined," Isaiah 25:6 proceeding from milk to stronger meat, Hebrews 5:12 and being to the world, as a weaned child. His mouth
Genesis 29:12 intimate acquaintance, with never so near an alliance. Flies may settle upon the sweetest perfumes, and putrify them. St Paul saw cause to exhort Timothy (that mortified young man) to exhort the younger women, "as sisters with all purity"; 1 Timothy 5:2 because, through the subtilty of Satan, and the deceit of his own heart, even whilst he was exhorting them to chastity, some unchaste motions might steal upon him. A great deal of caution doth no hurt. Abuadans cautela non nocet .
Genesis 31:9
Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given [them] to me.
Thus God hath taken away, … — He is the true proprietary, and gives and takes away these outward things at pleasure; as Hannah hath it. 1 Samuel 2:7 And, "promotion cometh neither from the east nor west," saith David; "nor yet from the south," Psalms 75:6 where the warm sunshine is: much less from the north (for, Ab Aquilone nihil boni ); "but God is the judge;
Genesis 32:9 into suit. And it is no arrogancy nor presumption, to burden God, as it were, with his promise; and of duty to claim and challenge his aid, help, and assistance, in all perils, said Robert Glover, martyr, in a letter to his wife. Act. and Mon., fol. 1553. Such prayers will be nigh the Lord day and night, 1 Kings 8:59 he can as little deny them, as deny himself.
Genesis 33:13 all the flock will die.
If men should over-drive. — A pattern of a good pastor, ever to have an eye to the weak ones; and so to regard all in his flock, as he overdrive not any. "Who hath despised the day of small things?" Zechariah 4:10 Weak ones are to be received, "but not to doubtful disputations." Romans 14:1 Novices are not to be put upon the austerities of religion. Matthew 9:15 Christ preached "as they were able to hear." Mark 4:33 Peter was specially charged
Genesis 37:15 that thus offereth himself to wandering Joseph, and sets him in his way again. At Athens there were public curses appointed against such as showed not those their error that were out of the way. Dion. Lamb., in Corn. Nep. See the like, Deuteronomy 27:18 . "Brethren," saith St James, "if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him, let him know that he saves a soul from death"; James 5:19-20 yea, he pulls him out of the fire of hell, saith Jude Ex igne gehennali - Pareus.
Genesis 39:2
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
And the Lord was with Joseph, and he, … — "The Lord" also "is with you, while ye be with him": 2 Chronicles 15:2 and so long you may promise yourselves prosperity; that of Gaius, howsoever, - that your souls shall prosper; and for most part also, your outward estates. If it fall out otherwise, it is because God will have godliness admired for itself. If ungodly
1 Corinthians 9:23 sowed with a dirty hand; the well yield excellent water, though it have much mud. Noah’s builders were drowned: and the sign that telleth the passenger there is wholesome diet or warm lodging within, may itself remain in the storms without. See 1 Timothy 4:16 . Nihil turpius est Peripatetico claudo. Oh how many heavenly doctrines are in some people’s ears, that never were in the preacher’s heart. So true is that of Hilary, Sanctiores sunt aures plebis, quam corda sacerdotum. More
1 Thessalonians 5:3 day.
Then shall sudden destruction — As philosophers say, that before a snow the weather will be warmish; when the wind lies, the great rain falls; and the air is most quiet when suddenly there will be an earthquake.
As travail upon a woman — 1. Certainly; 2. Suddenly; 3. Irresistibly, inevitably.
2 Timothy 2:9
Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.
But the word of God is not bound — It runs and is glorified, 2 Thessalonians 3:1 , being free and not fettered. I preach, though a prisoner, saith Paul; so did Bradford and other martyrs. Within a few days of Queen Mary’s reign, almost all the prisons in England were become right Christian schools and churches (saith Mr Fox),
Hebrews 2:8 things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
Under his feet — It is not said, under his hands, but under his feet: 1. That he may trample upon them with his feet, and not dote upon them with his heart. 2. That by them, as by a step or stirrup, he may raise his heart to things above. A sanctified fancy can make every creature a ladder to heaven.
He left nothing —
Hebrews 6:8 The sin against the Holy Ghost is therefore unpardonable, because God (not suffering himself to be derided, or his Spirit of truth to be found a liar) smiteth these sinners against their own souls, with blindness and reprobacy of mind. Whence follows, 1. An impossibility of repentance, sith it is the work of that Spirit whom they have despited, and will not suffer any saving operation of his to fasten on their souls. 2. Such a desperate fury invadeth them, that they resist and repudiate the matter
1 John 3:15 world, as Caracalla did his brother Geta, of whom he said, Divus sit, modo non sit vivus, I would he were in heaven or anywhere, so that I were rid of him. By like reason we may say that sin is God-murder; forasmuch as sinners are God haters, Romans 1:30 , and could wish there were no God, that they might never come to judgment. The godly man, on the contrary, cries out with David, Vivat Deus, " Let the Lord live, and blessed be the God of my salvation," …,Psalms 18:46; Psalms 18:46
Revelation 2:24 none other burden.
But unto you I say — Here Christ comes with his fan, shedding and shoaling out his own from others, that they might not be disheartened, when worse men were menaced,
The depths of Satan — That science falsely so called, 1 Timothy 6:20 . Those profound points, which the impostors professed and pretended to: as the Gnostics, who would needs be held the only knowing men; the Illuminates, and other seducers, who had taken up a trick to qualify their devilish doctrines with
Revelation 4:7 and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
Full of eyes within — To look to themselves also as well as to the flock, Acts 20:28 , lest while they preach to others, …, 1 Corinthians 9:27 .
They rest not — Gr. They have no rest, and yet they have no unrest either, the sweet content they take in their continual employment is fitter to be believed than possible to be discoursed.
Holy, holy — This they double,
