Genesis 19:7 not so wickedly.
Do not so wickedly. — They were the first that fell into this foul sin, and were therefore worthily hanged up in gibbets by God for a terror to others; and besides, they "suffer the vengeance of eternal fire". Judges 1:7 The Pope pretends to be Christ’s vicar, and presumes to assume the title of Holiness. But how far he is from expressing God to the world appears by his, if not committing, yet conniving at, this detestable sin of sodomy … God hath delivered
Psalms 148:2
Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.
Praise ye him, all his angels — Whose proper office it is to adore and praise God, Job 38:7 Isaiah 6:3 Hebrews 1:6 , which also they do constantly and completely; as those that both perfectly know him and love him. Jacob saw them, 1. Ascending, to contemplate and praise the Lord, and minister to him, Luke 2:13 Daniel 7:10 Matthew 18:10 Psalms 103:20 . Psalms 103:2
Psalms 72:10 continent, is called an isle, Isaiah 20:6 , because separated from other countries; with whom God would have his people to have as little to do as might be, that they might not be corrupted with foreign fashions. This was accomplished partly in Solomon; see 1 Kings 4:21 ; 1 Kings 4:34 ; 1 Kings 10:25 ; perfectly it is, and shall be in Christ: De Solomone certum est, de Christo certius, saith Kimchi; all the kingdoms of the earth shall one day be his kingdoms; he shall be the universal Monarch, and he alone.
Psalms 82:6
I have said, Ye [are] gods; and all of you [are] children of the most High.
I have said, Ye are gods — As Psalms 82:1 , but doubly so, if good too; if they excel both in virtue and power, as Aristotle joineth them, κατ αρετην και την πολιτικην δυναμιν
Leviticus 14:34 a house of the land of your possession;
Plague of leprosy in a house. — Such is the contagion of sin, that it will infect the very house we dwell in, the garments we wear, even all the creatures we use, so as all things are to us impure; Titus 1:13 even the house of God also, Leviticus 16:16 and his holy ordinances. The Canaanites had defiled the land from one end to another with their uncleannesses, Ezra 9:11 and so infected the air. This law taught men, (1.) Upon all occasions to show their
Isaiah 44:2
Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, [which] will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
Thus saith the Lord that made thee. — See on Isaiah 43:1 ; Isaiah 43:7 ; Isaiah 43:21 , and observe how this chapter runneth parallel with the former; yea, how the prophet, from Isaiah 40:1-31 to Isaiah 66:1-24 , doth one and the same thing almost, labouring to comfort his people against the Babylonian captivity,
Jeremiah 43:2 Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:
Then spake Azariah. — See on Jeremiah 42:1 .
And all the proud men. — Pride is the root of rebellion. See Jeremiah 13:15 . These men’s pride budded, as Ezekiel 7:10 and as the leprosy, brake forth in their foreheads. See Hosea 7:1 . See Trapp on " Hosea 7:1 "
Saying unto
Daniel 1:6 children of Judah, Daniel. — Who had not his name for nought, as we say, but by a providence. It signifieth, God is my judge; and so, indeed, he was throughout his whole life, but especially when they cast him into the lions’ den. Daniel 6:16 David had also a son of the same name, and that by Abigail, 2 Samuel 3:3 1 Chronicles 3:1 in remembrance haply of the right that God had done him upon the churl Nabal. 1 Samuel 25:39
Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. — Good names all, and good
Daniel 11:45 end, and none shall help him.
And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace, — i.e., He shall pitch his tent-royal (in token of full power given to his captains Lysias and the rest) in Emmaus, near to Jerusalem, to keep the Jews in subjection. 1 Maccabees 3:40 ; 1 Maccabees 4:3
Between the seas. — The Dead Sea and the Medditerranean Sea, which are the bounds of Judea, called here the glorious holy mountain. Polyb.; Joseph., lib. xii. cap. 12.
Yet he shall come to his end. — A loathsome
Zechariah 2:2 thereof.
Whither goest thou? — This was great boldness; but the prophet understood himself well enough; and Christ approves and assents to it in a gracious answer here, and especially Zechariah 2:4 . Great is the confidence of a good conscience toward God, 1 Peter 3:21 . See Isaiah 63:16-17 Habakkuk 1:12 . We may come boldly to the throne of grace, Hebrews 4:16 .
To measure Jerusalem — This had been promised before, Zechariah 1:16 . But for their further confirmation, who saw a little likelihood of
Luke 16:1
And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
A certain rich man which had a steward — Masters had need look well, 1. To the choosing of their servants. Solomon saw Jeroboam, that he was industrious, and therefore, without any respect at all to his religion, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph, but to his singular disadvantage. 1 Kings 11:28
Luke 19:42 thou hadst known — They had cognitionem historicam non mysticam, speculativam non affectivam, apprehensionis non approbationis, discursivam non experimentalem.
At least in this thy day — The time of grace is fitly called a day in regard of, 1.Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 2:1-29 . Adornation; 3. Consolation; 4. Distinction; 5. Speedy pretrition. Amend before the drawbridge be taken up. No man can say he shall have 12 hours to his day.
But now they are hid from thine eyes — Yet they
Hebrews 1:9
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
Hath anointed thee — This imports two things: 1. Ordination to his office, and so the Godhead also of Christ was anointed. 2. Qualification for it, and so the manhood only. And as the holy oil was compounded of various spices, so was Christ filled with all gifts and graces, Acts 10:38 ; but especially
Hebrews 7:27 and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Who needeth not daily — καθ ημεραν . Or, on a certain day of the year, so. at the feast of the expiations, Leviticus 16:29 ; see Hebrews 10:1 .
First for his own sins — Else how could he stand before God for others? the priests therefore had their laver wherein to wash, before they offered any man’s sacrifice. The brazen altar stood without, the incense
Judges 7:22 the Lord set every man’s sword against his fellow. — For being smitten by God with a spirit of giddiness, they took their friends for their foes: and, like those terrigenae fratres, they slaughtered one another in the place. See the like, 1 Samuel 14:15-20 2 Chronicles 20:23 .
And the host fled to Bethshittah, … — Places unknown to us out of Scripture, save only Abelmeholah, This Abelmeholah was afterwards the habitation of the prophet Elisha. 1 Kings 19:16 which was in the
Revelation 20:8 Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
Gog and Magog — That is, pope and Turk, saith Aretius; the pope a covert enemy to Christ; the Turk an overt or open enemy; as Gog and Magog signify,Ezekiel 38:1-23; Ezekiel 38:1-23 ; Ezekiel 39:1-29 . These are set forth by Ezekiel as the last enemies of God’s people before Shiloh come; and presently after their utter overthrow, the state of the city and temple is notably described. So, after the pope
