Genesis 2:22 her unto the man.
And the rib which the Lord God had taken. — Matter, in the beginning of time, was taken from man to make a woman. And matter, in the fulness of time, was taken from a woman to make a man, even "the man Christ Jesus". 1 Timothy 2:5 And as out of the side of sleeping Adam Eve was formed; so, from the blood issuing out of the side and flesh of dying Christ, came his spouse the Church. His chief care therein was to "sanctify and cleanse" Ephesians 5:26 his Church,
Exodus 15:11
Who [is] like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who [is] like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful [in] praises, doing wonders?
Who is like unto thee? — One of the most stately descriptions of God that is found in Holy Writ. God is to be magnified: we must make room for him. This chapter Exodus 15:1-27 and Judges 5:1-31 are rightly called by one, "monumental chapters."
Exodus 28:38
And it shall be upon Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.
That Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things. — Get the people’s pardon. This Christ did indeed for all his. 1 John 2:1-2
Psalms 19:7 that blessed book, as a dead letter, and a beggarly element, …; when as the apostle telleth us, that all Scripture is pure, precious, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, …, that the man of God may be perfect, …, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 . Here in this and the two following verses it is easy to observe
1. That every one of them are in the Hebrew written with ten words. 2. That here is a sixfold commendation of God’s holy word. (l.) By the several names thereunto given, law,
Leviticus 16:11
And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which [is] for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which [is] for himself:
An atonement for himself. — That having first made his own peace, he may be in case to atone for the people. This was David’s method. Psalms 25:1-22 Psalms 51:1-19
Leviticus 2:5
And if thy oblation [be] a meat offering [baken] in a pan, it shall be [of] fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.
Baken in a pan. — Afterwards parted in pieces, and oil poured upon it: signifying the graces of God’s Spirit wherewith Christ was fully anointed within and without, Psalms 45:8 and wherewith we should be tempered and anointed. 1 John 2:27 2 Corinthians 1:21
Haggai 1:1 unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
In the second year of Darius the king — Not of Darius the Mede, as Genebrard noteth, for he was predecessor to Cyrus, Daniel 5:31 , and Haggai prophesied after Cyrus and Cambyses, Ezra 4:5 ; Ezra 5:1 , neither of Darius Nothus, as Scaliger in his book, De Emend. Temporum (the doctrine whereof is almost wholly fictitious, saith one, and founded upon the confines of nothing); but
Haggai 1:8 with a contradiction. Thou repentest and yet continuest in thy sin. God will pardon thee and yet send thee to hell. Those that will have God to take pleasure in them, as in his temple, to love them and come unto them, and make his abode with them, John 14:23 , to dwell in them, and walk in them, 2 Corinthians 6:16 (as they did in Solomon’s porch, and other walks and galleries about the temple, Zechariah 3:7 ), to be glorified in them (accounting himself to receive, as it were, a new being, by
Matthew 2:23 came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth — Hence an opinion among the people that he was born there, John 7:42 and so could not be the Messiah, as the Pharisees on that ground persuaded: "For can any good come out of Nazareth?" John 1:46 . The devils also, though they confessed him "the Holy One of God," Mark 1:24-25 yet they cunningly call him "Jesus of Nazareth," to nourish the error of the multitude that thought he was born there, and so not the Christ. When
Acts 27:5
And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
And when we had sailed — These things are therefore particularly set down, that we may see Paul’s perils by sea no less than by land; and say with Solomon, "No man knoweth either love or hatred" by all that befalleth him, Ecclesiastes 9:1 . See Trapp on " Ecclesiastes 9:1 "
Romans 15:3
For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
For even Christ — And we should express him to the world, preach abroad his virtues by our practice, 1 Peter 2:9 . Our lives should be as so many sermons upon the life of Christ. This is to walk in Christ, Colossians 2:6 , as Christ, 1 John 3:6 .
1 Corinthians 1:20 ημων δευτερωσι .
Where is the scribe? — Or the textmen, those that proceed according to the literal interpretation.
Where is the disputer? — The teachers of allegories and mysteries, 1 Timothy 1:4 .
Galatians 3:5
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Or by the hearing of faith — Faith (and so life) is let into the soul by the sense of hearing,Isaiah 55:1-3; Isaiah 55:1-3 , to cross the devil, who by the same door brought death into the world.
Philippians 2:5
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Let this mind be in you — We should strive to express Christ to the world, not as a picture doth a man in outward lineaments only, but as a child doth his father in affections and actions. Our lives should be as so many sermons upon Christ’s life,1 Peter 2:9; 1 Peter 2:9 .
1 John 2:18
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Little children — Children may easily be deceived, and made to take a sheep counter for an angel, because broader and brighter; so young Christians are soon seduced; hence they are cautioned. See Trapp on " 1 John 1:5 "
1 Samuel 1:24
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child [was] young.
With three bullocks. — One for sacrifice, 1 Samuel 1:25 and the other two for the use of the priests, who lived of the oblations. Let ministers be liberally maintained.
