Habakkuk 3:13 — otherwise, when God came with them into the field? If Queen Elizabeth could take for her motto, Cui adhaereo, praeest, He to whom I adhere prevaileth, how much more may Almighty God say as much? Even for salvation with thine anointed — i.e. With David, 1 Samuel 16:12-13; 2 Samuel 5:3 ; 2 Samuel 5:17 ; 2 Samuel 19:22 ; 2 Samuel 22:51 ; Psalms 20:7 ; a lively type of Christ, that Messiah the prince, the mystery of which promised Saviour the ancient Jewish doctors confessed to be contained in this text.
Zephaniah 3:11 — midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain. In that day shalt thou not be ashamed — There is a holy shame for sin, such as was that of Ezra, Ezra 9:6 , of the penitent publican, Luke 18:13 , and of those good souls in Ezekiel, who blushing and bleeding loathed themselves for their abominations, Ezekiel 16:52 . To be ashamed on this sort is no shame, but a sign of that godly sorrow that worketh repentance never to be repented of; and
Zechariah 1:11 — fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest. We have walked to and fro through the earth — Itavimus, we have coursed up and down with incredible swiftness. Hence they are called the chariots of God, Psalms 68:17 (Heb. God’s chariot, to note out their joint service, as of one), as here his horsemen, ready pressed to do his pleasure. And behold all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest — Excepting the Church alone, which, like Noah’s ark,
Zechariah 1:18 — helmets. And behold four horns — Not the four monarchies, for the Grecians and Romans were not yet; and this is spoken here for the present comfort of the afflicted Church, but the enemies of Israel from all the four parts of the world, see Psalms 107:2-3 , for they were surrounded: on the north were the Syrians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. ( Ab Aquilone nihil boni, Jeremiah 4:6 ; Jeremiah 6:1 ). On the east the Ammonites and Moabites. On the south the Edomites and Egyptians. On the west the Philistines,
Zechariah 14:17 — bread basket of the whole world, as one saith, a very fat and fertile country; but yet so as that her fruitfulness depended much upon seasonable showers, the former and latter rain; and the prophet seemeth here to allude to that of Moses, Deuteronomy 11:10-11 , … If God did not hear the heaven, and the heaven the earth, the earth could not hear the grain, wine, and oil, nor those hear Jezreel, Hosea 2:22 . Judea was not like that country in Pliny, ubi siccitas dat lutum, imbres pulverem, where
Zechariah 2:4 — him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited [as] towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein: Run, speak to this young man — Not go, but run; yea, fly swiftly, with weariness of flight, as Daniel 9:21 . Christ thinks it long ere his praying people hear from him. Only he will be inquired of by them, Ezekiel 36:37 . Zechariah seems to have been a young prophet, and Christ remembered the kindness of his youth, and became a wonderful counsellor to him;
Zechariah 7:7 — Lord hath cried — q.d. Hath he not spoken loud enough, long enough? Hath he not sufficiently declared his will concerning these external actions, and especially concerning a fast profaned through wickedness, Isaiah 58:8 ; Isaiah 58:4 Jeremiah 14:12 , and elsewhere. Sed surdo fabulam; But a story falling on deaf ears. All hath been but as a trumpet sounded in a dead man’s ear; you are altogether uncounsellable, untractable; and all that hath been spoken hath even been spilt upon you. Should
Matthew 16:3 — the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? Can you not discern the sign of the times? — The men of Issachar were in great account with David, because "they had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do," 1 Chronicles 12:32 ; "A prudent man foreseeth an evil, and hideth himself," Proverbs 22:3 . He foreseeth it; not by divination, or star gazing, but by a judicious collection and connection of causes and consequences: as, if God be the same that
Matthew 18:10 — that a man had better anger all the witches in the world than one of these little ones. I tell you, some great ones have been fain to humble themselves, and to lick the very dust of their feet sometimes, that they might be reconciled to them, Isaiah 60:14 . If Cain do but lower upon Abel, God will arraign him for it, Genesis 4:6 . Why is thy countenance cast down? Why dost look so doggedly? If Miriam do but mutter against Moses, God will spit in her face,Numbers 12:14; Numbers 12:14: and if Aaron had
Matthew 18:17 — affirmed, that they would by no means yield to the pope’s pleasure therein, sed si exeommunicaturus veniret, excommunicatus abiret cum aliter se habeat antiquorum canonum authoritas. Ussier, de Christianae Eccl. statu et successione. If he should cast
Matthew 23:35 — righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. From the blood of righteous Abel — God reckons of men by their righteousness, Romans 10:4-6 The righteous (let him dwell where he will and by whom) is better than his neighbour, saith Solomon. This was Cain’s grief, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother; and wherefore slew he him, but because his own works were evil and
Matthew 23:37 — unto thee,Matthew 23:34-35; Matthew 23:34-35 . Not by internal regenerating operation of the Spirit. Even as a hen gathereth her chickens — Columbarum masculus ipse ovis incubat, sicut Christus ipse ecclesiam suam fovet. (Chytraeus in Leviticus 12:1-8 ) Of unreasonable creatures, birds, and of birds, the hen excels in kindness to her young; so that she doubts not, in their clarence, to encounter a kite, a dog, …, Iniquo et impari proelio, though with greatest disadvantage. And ye would
Matthew 24:38 — Noe entered into the ark, They were eating and drinking — Wine, likely; because our Saviour hereupon bids his apostles take heed to themselves lest their hearts at any time should be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, …, Luke 21:34 . Like as some do not improbably conjecture, that Nadab and Abihu were in their drink when they offered strange fire, because after they were devoured by fire from the Lord. Aaron and the priests are charged to drink no wine nor strong drink when
Matthew 5:40 — Philistines strove with him about the wells he had digged. Not but that we may take the benefit of the law, and crave the help of the magistrate, for preventing or punishing of wrong done us; as Paul sent to the chief captain, and appealed to Caesar, Acts 23:17 ; Acts 25:10 . " Lis legem genuit, legum lis filia; vivi Nec sine lite solet, nec sine lege potest. " (Owen, Epigr.) But this must be done neither with a vindictive nor a covetous mind, as the manner is. Heathens in this case would consecrate something to their gods, to their Teraphim. The very word in Greek that signifies to heal (framed from Teraphim) signifies first
Luke 2:7 — firstborn — Whether she were Deipara, the mother of God, was a great controversy, and raised a great storm in the Council of Ephesus; insomuch as the emperor declared both sides heretics. But forasmuch as she was the mother of Christ, Matthew 1:23 , and Christ is God; in bringing forth Christ, she was the mother of God. θεοτοκος non θεοδοχος , ut voluit Nestorius. Whether she continued
John 18:6 — — Here our Saviour let out a little beam of the majesty of his Deity, and 500 men fell before him. Quid autem iudicaturus faciet, qui iudicandus hae fecit? saith Augustine. "The wicked shall not stand in judgment," saith David, Psalms 1:5 . Christ shall "smite the earth with the rod of his mouth," saith Isaiah; and with "the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked," Isaiah 11:4 . Godly men (who have but a drop of Christ’s ocean, a spark of his flame) have
John 21:17 — vincat ), lift up his voice like a trumpet, speak till he spit forth his lungs, and yet to no more purpose many times than Beda did when he preached to a heap of stones. Now this he will never do, unless the love of Christ constrain him,2 Corinthians 5:14; 2 Corinthians 5:14 ; cf. 1 Corinthians 16:22 .
