1 Kings 11:12
Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: [but] I will rend it out of the hand of thy son.
Out of the hand of thy son, — i.e., Rehoboam, the only son that Solomon had by so many wives and concubines, quod prodigii instar est, saith one, which may well seem a wonder. See Psalms 127:1 Hosea 4:10 See Trapp on title of " Psalms 127:1 "
1 Kings 6:29
And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
And he carved all the walls. — See on 1 Kings 6:25 .
Of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers. — To note, saith one, the protection of the Church of Christ by the ministry of angels - though outwardly unseen - and the peaceable victorious flourishing under the same. Hebrews 1:14
2 Kings 22:4
Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:
Go up to Helkiah the high priest. — Who perhaps was father to Jeremiah the prophet. Jeremiah 1:1
That he may sum the silver. — That is, Count it; or as some will, Stamp it, and put it into current money.
1 Chronicles 17:1
Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD [remaineth] under curtains.
Now it came to pass. — This is a notable chapter, full of divine doctrine: but it is the same, word for word almost, with 2 Samuel 7:1-29 See Trapp on " 2 Samuel 7:1 " …
1 Chronicles 4:17
And the sons of Ezra [were], Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon: and she bare Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.
And the sons of Ezra. — Not that learned scribe, Ezra 7:1 - there is a difference in the last letter of their names - but the son, as it seems, of Asareel.
And she bare, — i.e., Bithiah 1 Chronicles 4:18 bare.
Miriam. — The name of a man in this place.
1 Chronicles 6:5
And Abishua begat Bukki, and Bukki begat Uzzi,
And Bukki begat Uzzi. — In this man’s time it is supposed that Eli (and so his posterity after him) got the high priest’s office - sed quo iure quave iniuria, parum constat - till after four generations it was resettled by Solomon upon Zadok, the son of Ahitub, 1 Kings 2:27 ; 1 Kings 2:35 who [with his descendants] were high priests till after the captivity.
Psalms 67:3
Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
Let the people praise thee, O God — Enlarge the bounds of thy Church; and bring in the hallelujahs of the Gentiles also. Let them praise thee (that pronoun "thee" is emphatic and exclusive), and not their gods of gold and silver. Let them turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 1 Thessalonians 1:9 .
Proverbs 24:26
[Every man] shall kiss [his] lips that giveth a right answer.
Every man shall kiss his lips. — That is, Shall do him honour, as Genesis 41:40 . All the people shall kiss at thy mouth, saith Pharaoh to Joseph; and Samuel kissed Saul when he anointed him king; 1 Samuel 10:1 and, "Kiss the Son," saith David. Psalms 2:12 That is, Give unto him the honour due unto his name.
Proverbs 6:15
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
Suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. — A dismal doom: broken, and not bruised only; "suddenly" broken, when they least dream or dread the danger. And this "without remedy"; no possibility of piecing them up again, or putting them into a better condition. See this exemplified in Nabal, 1 Samuel 25:36-38 and Doeg. Psalms 52:1-9
Isaiah 21:16
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:
Within a year, after the years of an hireling. — See on Isaiah 16:14 ; before the year be come about.
All the glory of Kedar. — Whose tents Psalms 120:5 were rude, but rich. Song of Solomon 1:5 See Trapp on " Song of Solomon 1:5 "
Isaiah 40:18
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
To whom then will ye liken God? — A sin which the Jews were exceeding prone unto, and would be tempted to, when in captivity at Babylon; here therefore they have an antidote provided beforehand. The voice of the gospel is, "Little children, keep yourselves from idols." 1 John 5:21 See Trapp on " 1 John 5:21 "
Jeremiah 25:18
[To wit], Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as [it is] this day;
To wit, in Jerusalem. — Judgment beginneth at God’s house 1 Peter 4:17 See Trapp on " 1 Peter 4:17 " See Trapp on " Matthew 25:41 " Sed si in Hierosolymis maneat scrutinium, quid fiet in Babylone? saith an ancient.
Jeremiah 46:4
Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with [your] helmets; furbish the spears, [and] put on the brigandines.
Harness the horses. — Those warlike creatures, but yet vain things for safety. Psalms 33:17 Proverbs 21:31 Egypt was famous for the best horses; Deuteronomy 17:16 1 Kings 10:26 ; 1 Kings 10:28 but the Lord delighteth not in the strength of a horse, … Psalms 147:10-11
Matthew 12:9
And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:
He went into their synagogue — These were chapels of ease to the temple, of ancient use, Acts 15:21 , and Divine authority, Psalms 74:8 . This here is called the Pharisees’ synagogue, because they did Dominari in concionibus, lead in the gatherings, Romans 2:19-20 , and are for their skill called princes,1 Corinthians 2:8; 1 Corinthians 2:8 .
Matthew 22:45
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
Lord, how is he his Son? — This is that great mystery of godliness, which angels intently look into, 1 Peter 1:12 , as the cherubims did of old into the mercy seat. That Christ should be David’s Lord and David’s Son, God and man in one person, this is that wonder of wonders. Well might his name be Wonderful, Isaiah 9:6 .
Mark 11:2
And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him .
Whereon never man sat — As if it had been done on set purpose. Here was a wheel within a wheel,Ezekiel 1:10; Ezekiel 1:10 , the better to convince the stubborn Jews of his kingly office.
Mark 4:36
And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
They took him — viz. Out of that part of the ship where he had taught, into another part more convenient, where he might rest. For he had preached all that day, till the evening, without taking either repast or repose,Mark 4:1; Mark 4:1 .
Luke 1:64
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed , and he spake, and praised God.
And he spake and praised God — And had he had as many tongues as he had hairs upon his head, he could never have sufficiently praised God for his son, but especially for his Saviour. See 1 Timothy 1:15-17 . Zacharias believeth and therefore speaks, Psalms 116:10 . The tongue of the dumb sings, Isaiah 35:6 .
Luke 19:9
And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
He also is a son of Abraham — That is, freely elected,Romans 9:1; Romans 9:1 , a follower of Abraham’s faith,Romans 4:12; Romans 4:12 , and a doer of his works, John 8:39 . Who then can say but he is his son, and shall rest in his bosom?
1 Samuel 14:48
And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
And he gathered a host, — See on 1 Samuel 14:47 .
And delivered Israel out of the hands. — God may make use of wicked men as instruments to defend his people: "the earth helped the woman"; Revelation 12:16 yet the vials of God’s wrath were poured out "upon the earth." Revelation 16:1
