1 Kings 17:13 — And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go [and] do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring [it] unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. But make me thereof a little cake first. — Here "the trial of" this poor widow’s "faith, being much more precious than that of gold which perisheth, though it be tried in the fire, is found to praise, and honour, and glory." 1 Peter 1:7

1 Kings 2:35 — And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar. And Zadok the priest did the king put, … — Abiathar, the fourth from Eli, was of the race of Ithamar, the younger brother. Zadok was the right heir of Eleazar and Phinehas, Numbers 25:13 1 Chronicles 6:3 , … and was therefore rightly restored by Solomon. Of his commendation, see 1 Samuel 2:35 .

1 Chronicles 1:43 — Now these [are] the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before [any] king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city [was] Dinhabah. 2 Chronicles 9:1 — And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart. And when the queen of Sheba. — See on 1 Kings 10:1 . Saba forte α σεβομαι , for the plenty of frankincense and sweet odours there.

Psalms 119:155 — Salvation [is] far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes. Salvation is far from the wicked — How can it be otherwise? when as God is neither in their heads, Psalms 10:4 , nor hearts, Psalms 14:1 , nor words, Psalms 12:4 , nor ways, Titus 1:16 , can these have part or portion in his salvation? For they seek not — This contempt of God’s word is a plain proof that no part or piece of God’s favour belongeth to them.

Psalms 37:15 — Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. Their sword shall enter into their own heart — As did Saul’s, and his armourbearer’s, 1 Samuel 31:4-5 see Psalms 7:1 . And their bows shall be broken — Neither their bows only, but their arms also, Psalms 37:17 . They shall utterly be disarmed and disabled when once God takes them to do; which is commonly when they are at the strongest and most confident.

Psalms 50:4 — He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth — That these dumb creatures may be as so many speaking evidences against an unworthy people, and witnesses of God’s righteous dealings against them. See Deuteronomy 32:1 Isaiah 1:2 Micah 6:2 . The Chaldee thus paraphraseth, He will call the high angels from above; and the just of the earth from beneath.

Psalms 78:6 — That the generation to come might know [them, even] the children [which] should be born; [who] should arise and declare [them] to their children: Who shall arise and declare them — i.e. Succeed their parents both in their place and office of teaching their posterity; not suffering the truth which is after godliness Titus 1:1 to fail and fall in the streets, Isaiah 59:14-15 , or if it do, raising it up again, and restoring it to their utmost.

Psalms 82:8 — Arise, O God, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations. Arise, O God, judge the earth — Take the matter into thine own hand, for it is but time, all things here being, so ill-ordered by thy substitutes; nam alioqui prae iudiciorum constupratione terra tota videtur collapsura, all will be nought else. For thou shalt inherit all nations — Thou, Lord Jesus, shalt, Psalms 2:8 Hebrews 1:1-14: 2 Kings 11:15 . Come, therefore, yea, come quickly.

Ezekiel 43:5 — So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. So the spirit took me up. — Who was fallen upon my face. The lowly shall be lifted up. And brought me into the inner court. — As being a priest. So is every true believer. 1 Peter 2:9 Revelation 1:6 Filled the house. — God’s presence is the full glory of each good soul. See Haggai 2:7 .

Ezekiel 7:21 — And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it. Numbers 18:13 — shall eat [of] it. And whatsoever is first ripe. — See what an honourable maintenance, and liberal entertainment God himself assigneth to the Levitical priesthood. Matthew 15:28 — Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. O woman, great is thy faith — Our Saviour had both reproached and repulsed her. Now he both graceth and gratifieth her; grants her request, and more, together with a high commendation of her heroic faith, which is here found beforehand to "praise and honour and glory," 1 Peter 1:7 .

Deuteronomy 4:2 — least, to the Holy Scriptures; and so argue them of insufficiency and imperfection. Oι σοφοι ημων δευτερωσι , Our wise men teach tradition See 1 Corinthians 1:20 .

Luke 23:15 — No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. No, nor yet Herod — Nor any man alive, though he had the devil to help him. The poets bring in Momus finding fault with the creaking of Venus’ slipper. But Christ was αμνος αμωμος , as St Peter calleth him, 1 Peter 1:19 , the spotless Lamb of God, in whom Momus himself could find nothing amiss, after long seeking. See John 14:30 .

John 20:31 — But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. These things are written — He speaks this of the writ of the other three evangelists also. Matthew wrote his Gospel eight years after Christ, Mark 10:1-52 , Luke 15:1-32 , and John 42 misprint in original text, in the days of Trajan. He died in the 101st year of his own age.

John 4:19 — The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet — To the "hidden man of the heart," 1 Peter 3:4 , the plain song ever makes the best music. The Corinthian idiot, convinced of all, and having the secrets of his heart ripped up by the two-edged sword, "falls down upon his face worshipping God," and reporteth that "God is in the ministers of a truth," 1 Corinthians 14:24-25 .

John 8:41 — Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. We have one Father, even God — Yet God is not in their heads, Psalms 10:4 , nor heart, Psalms 14:1 , nor words,Psalms 12:4; Psalms 12:4 , nor ways, Titus 1:16 . In such a posture of distance, nay, defiance, stand wicked men. And yet none so forward to call God Father, Jeremiah 3:4-5 .

Acts 7:34 — I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. I have seen, I have seen — To my grief and regret. God is said to suffer in the sufferings of his people. The Father, Isaiah 63:9 , the Son, Acts 9:4 , the Holy Ghost,1 Peter 4:14; 1 Peter 4:14 .
