Genesis 14:15
And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which [is] on the left hand of Damascus.
Smote them, and pursued them. — Abram came upon them as they were, - secure, sleepy, and drunken, as Josephus writeth. So did David upon the Amalekites, 1 Samuel 30:16 and Ahab the Syrians. 1 Kings 20:16 The division of his company, and taking benefit of the night, teacheth the use of godly policies and stratagems.
Job 11:3 at the hearing of them, and so become guilty of thy sin by a tacit consent? Can any mortal wight hear what thou hast said in behalf of thine own imaginary innocence, Job 6:29-30 , and how bold an appeal thou hast made to God as a witness thereof, Job 10:7 , and not reply upon thee, and reprove thee? The truth is, had Job been a liar, as Zophar would make of him (even mendaciorum loquacissimum, as Tertullian saith of Tacitus, one that fearing his many words would not carry his cause, had intermixed
Habakkuk 3:1
prayer of Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth.
A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet — Habakkuk signifieth a wrestler, that by closing striveth to get the better, as hath been before noted on Habakkuk 1:1 . To close with the adversary is the best way to supplant him, or to avoid the blow: so is running into God the way to escape him. The prophet had heard God’s speech and was afraid, Habakkuk 3:2 . He saw his wrath ready to break forth, and therefore
Malachi 3:4 wheresoever, in cities or countries; and observe that neither Judah nor Jerusalem, however highly honoured or favoured otherwise, shall have their offerings accepted in heaven, unless their hearts be first purified by faith. Till then their sacrifices, Romans 12:1 , how specious soever, are neither living (but dead works, as the author to the Hebrews calls it) nor holy, that is, pure and unpolluted, 1 Corinthians 7:34 , unless themselves be partakers of the grace of light, 1 Peter 3:7 , and can boldly say,
Matthew 11:29 me from the damning and domineering power of sin, you must not think to live as you wish. In the greatest freedom is the least licence. a To argue from mercy to liberty is the devil’s logic: from mercy to duty is the right reasoning, as Romans 12:1 . Christians must not be yokeless, aweless, masterless, Belialists, that wander at will as wild asses, or canes, αδεσποτοι , but they must yield the obedience of faith, and be adding to their
Deuteronomy 2:37
Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, [nor] unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
Only unto the land. — This kindness these Ammonites, in after ages, very evil requited, Amos 1:13 Jeremiah 49:1 dealing by them as that monster Michael Balbus dealt by the Emperor Leo Armenius, whom he slew the same night that this prince had pardoned and released him.
Acts 22:25
And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
A man that is a Roman — A citizen of Rome might neither be bound nor beaten. See Trapp on " Acts 16:37 " Paul by this freedom escaped whipping; we by that which Christ hath purchased us, not for gold or silver, but his own blood, 1 Peter 1:19 , escape the pain of eternal torment.
Romans 1:2 was their gospel, it was Christ in figure), and in the writings of the prophets; only by degrees and piecemeal, πολυμερως . God spake of old to our fathers, by his servants the prophets, Hebrews 1:1 . All was in riddles to what it is now; and that saying took place, Et latet, et lucet. It is close, and yet clear.
1 Corinthians 7:17
But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches.
But God hath distributed — In case you should not save your yoke fellow, yet keep your station, be content with your condition, and adorn it, 1 Peter 3:1-2 . It is the duty of a Christian (said Luther) to believe things invisible, to hope for things deferred, and to love God when he shows himself contrary to us.
1 Corinthians 7:18
Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised.
Let him not become uncircumcised — Some Jews, for fear of Antiochus, made themselves uncircumcised, RAPC 1 Maccabees 1:15. Others for shame after they were gained to the knowledge of Christ, as here. This was done by drawing up the foreskin with a sergeon’s instrument. And of this wicked invention Esau is said to be the first author and practiser.
Galatians 4:2 in comparison of those under the gospel. Aristophanes. The sea about the altar was brazen,1 Kings 7:23; 1 Kings 7:23 , and what eyes could pierce through it? Now our sea about the throne is glassy, Revelation 4:6 , like to crystal, clearly conveying the light and sight of God to our eyes.
Titus 1:2
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
God that cannot lie — The word of promise binds God; therefore it seems, saith one, that it is stronger than God; for he can as soon deny himself as his promise.
Promised — That is, purposed, as2 Timothy 1:9; 2 Timothy 1:9 , or decreed to promise, or promised to Christ, or promised to our first parents from the beginning of ages, ante multa saecula, so some sense it.
Titus 2:4 tonto que dijo: Μισω σοφην γυναικα, me encanta no tener una mujer sabia. (Eurip.) "La esposa prudente es del Señor". Tal era Abigail, y Aspasia, Milesia, la esposa de Ciro, de quien se decía que era Καλη και σοφη, justa y sabia también. (Eliano. Xii. 1.) Amar a sus maridos, aunque viejos y menos adorables, como ese famoso Valadaura en Ludovicus Vives.
Amar a sus hijos ] Y sellar su amor, no abrazándolos hasta la muerte, como los simios hacen con sus crías; sino educándolos en el temor y la amonestación
1 Peter 4:1 Así que, puesto que Cristo padeció por nosotros en la carne, armaos también de la misma mente; porque el que padeció en la carne, cesó del pecado;
Ver. 1.
Judges 1:11
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before [was] Kirjathsepher: Judges 1:12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. Judges 1:13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
Ver. 11-13, … See Joshua 15:15-16 , …, See Trapp on " Joshua 15:15 " See Trapp on " Joshua 15:16 " …
Judges 16:2
[And it was told] the Gazites, saying, Samson is come hither. And they compassed [him] in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
And they compassed him in. — See their sedulity and Samson’s security, but especially God’s superabundant mercy: 1 Timothy 1:14 the riches of his grace cast in over and above desert or desire. Ephesians 2:7 Romans 5:20
Revelation 21:9
And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb’s wife.
One of the seven angels — The same, likely, that, Revelation 17:1 , had showed him the damnation of the whore. So studious and officious are the angels to serve the saints, Hebrews 1:14 .
The bride, the Lamb’s wife — Uxor fulget radiis mariti, saith the civilian; so is it here.
1 Samuel 2:32
And thou shalt see an enemy [in my] habitation, in all [the wealth] which [God] shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
And thou shalt see an enemy, — i.e., A rival, another high priest, viz., Zadok, set up by Solomon. 1 Kings 1:26-27 "Thou shalt see it"; i.e., thy posterity shall, to their grief and regret:
In all the wealth. — In the time of Solomon’s most flourishing reign, the most gallant of that kingdom.
