2 Kings 17:20 — And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. And the Lord rejected. — Making them to become Loammi, and Loruhamah, according to Hosea 1:6 ; Hosea 1:9 . And delivered them into the hand of spoilers. — So that when to leave their dear country, they cried out to the mountains to cover them, and to the hills to fall upon them, according to Hosea 10:8 .

2 Kings 24:10 — At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. 1 Chronicles 15:16 — And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren [to be] the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy. 2 Chronicles 3:16 — And he made chains, [as] in the oracle, and put [them] on the heads of the pillars; and made an hundred pomegranates, and put [them] on the chains. 2 Chronicles 3:17 And he reared up the pillars before the temple, one on the right hand, and the other on the left; and called the name of that on the right hand Jachin, and the name of that on the left Boaz. Ver. 16,17. See 1 Kings 7:17-18 ; 1 Kings 7:21 .

Psalms 102:25 — Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens [are] the work of thy hands. Of old thou hast laid the foundation, … — Here is a clear proof of Christ’s eternity, Hebrews 1:10 , because he was before the creation of the world, and shall continue after the consummation thereof, Psalms 102:26-27 . So the saints a parte post. 1 John 2:17 , "The world passeth away, and the lusts thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."

Psalms 103:9 — He will not always chide: neither will he keep [his anger] for ever. He will not always chide — His still revenges are terrible, Genesis 6:3 , with 1 Peter 3:19 , but God, being appeased towards the penitent people, will not show his anger so much as in words, Isaiah 57:16 . Neither will he keep his anqer for ever — Much less must we, Leviticus 19:18 Ephesians 4:26 , though against his enemies God is expressly said to keep it, Nahum 1:2 .

Psalms 109:8 — persecutors. See the Book of Martyrs. And let another take his office — Praefecturam. Officers are ofttimes the Church’s chief enemies; Popish bishops especially, as here in Queen Mary’s days. Judas was guide to those that took Jesus, Acts 1:16 ; Acts 1:20 .

Proverbs 2:11 — thee, understanding shall keep thee: Discretion. — Heb., Thoughtfulness, or good advisement. Cogito quasi coagito. Becman, μεριμνα . Notat sereitatem, such as is that of the wife "to please her husband," 1 Corinthians 7:34 casting this way and that way how to give best content: or that of the good housewife to "build her house," Proverbs 14:1 studying in every business how to set everything in order, as the carpenter studies how to set every

Isaiah 11:12 — And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. And he shall set up an ensign. — Elevatio signi est praedicatio crucifixi. - Oecolamp. See on Isaiah 11:10 . The dispersed of Judah. — Dispersas oves Iudae. - Piscat. See John 7:35 James 1:1 . The word dispersed in the Hebrew is feminine, to show that no sort or sex shall be excluded. Colossians 3:11

Isaiah 63:2 — Wherefore [art thou] red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel? — The wondering Church had proposed two questions in Isaiah 63:1 - viz., Who that was? and why so bloodied? To the first she bad an answer in few, but very full in Isaiah 63:1 . To the second, she here again presseth for an answer; and the rather because, candor magis quam cruor, clemency would better beseem a Saviour than cruelty. Augustine.

Jeremiah 14:2 — Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. Judah mourneth. — The prophet’s pitiful complaint, bitterly bewailing the common calamity, and labouring thereby to bring them to a sense of the true cause of it, their sins. See 2 Samuel 21:1 . See Trapp on " 2 Samuel 21:1 " And the cry of Jerusalem is gone up, — sc., To heaven, for removal of this judgment. Compare Jeremiah 36:9 ; Jeremiah 14:12 .

Ezekiel 2:9 — And when I looked, behold, an hand [was] sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book [was] therein; Behold, a hand was sent. — A hand from heaven. A hand is index rei et instrumentum operationis sign to the matter and the tool of working. Ezekiel 40:44 — And without the inner gate [were] the chambers of the singers in the inner court, which [was] at the side of the north gate; and their prospect [was] toward the south: one at the side of the east gate [having] the prospect toward the north. Were the chambers of the singers. — These were to set forth that pastors should have all necessary help in their places by the other church officers. John 7:36 — What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me : and where I am, thither ye cannot come? What manner of saying is this? — He would not tell the Jews what he meant by this dark saying. His disciples he told afterwards, in John 13:1-38 ; John 14:1-31 . "The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him," Psalms 25:14: when the wicked shall be neither of his court nor council.
