Exodus 28:40 — And for Aaron’s sons thou shalt make coats, and thou shalt make for them girdles, and bonnets shalt thou make for them, for glory and for beauty. Coats — (1.) Linen garments for innocency; (2.) Girdles for constancy and stability; (3.) Bonnets for safety from the rage of Satan and his instrumants; (4.) Breeches, for comely reverance in God’s service.

1 Kings 12:9 — And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? Make the yoke. — He mentioneth not the people’s promise - "and we will serve thee" 1 Kings 12:4 - as not serving to his purpose.

1 Kings 7:8 — And his house where he dwelt [had] another court within the porch, [which] was of the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken [to wife], like unto this porch. Had another court. — Called "the middle court." 2 Kings 20:4 Like unto this porch. — All was uniform and spacious.

2 Kings 4:18 — And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. Went out to his father to the reapers. — This Shunammite, though rich, yet had himself the oversight of his harvest labourers: so had Boaz. Ruth 2:4 ; Ruth 3:2-7 This was good husbandry.

2 Kings 6:21 — And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite [them]? shall I smite [them]? My father, shall I smite them? — He calleth the prophet, "My father," either in a compliment, as Jeremiah 3:4 , or else in a sudden pang, which was soon over. See 2 Kings 6:31 .

Leviticus 17:10 — And whatsoever man [there be] of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people. Leviticus 5:18 — And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist [it] not, and it shall be forgiven him. Numbers 11:28 — And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, [one] of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them. My lord Moses, forbid. — Thus, "the spirit that is in us lusteth to envy." James 4:5 Nero omnium erat aemulus, qui quoquo mode animum vulgi moverint, Nero envied every man that excelled.

Numbers 6:1 — And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, And the Lord spake. — Est Venus in vinis: therefore after the law for the privy harlot, here is a law given for abstinence from wine and strong drink, which some have called lac veneris. The whore cometh forth with a cup, Revelation 17:4 as with a fit instrument.

Deuteronomy 22:1 — Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them: thou shalt in any case bring them again unto thy brother. Deuteronomy 28:67 — In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. Would God it were even. — A graphical description of misery. Compare Job 7:3-4 .

Deuteronomy 6:16 — Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted [him] in Massah. Ye shall not tempt the Lord. — By prescribing to God, and "limiting the Holy One of Israel," as these men did at Massah. 1 Timothy 6:2 — And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them , because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. Partakers of the benefit — i.e. Of Christ who is here called the benefit, as John 4:10 , the gift of God.

Judges 12:15 — And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites. And was buried in Pirathon. — Where Benaiah, David’s worthy, was born: and God loveth the places the better for that such and such of his servants were "born there." Psalms 87:4-6

Judges 4:10 — And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him. And he went up with ten thousand men at his feet. — They followed him κατα παδας , in due order, and, as it were, treading in his steps. See Trapp on " Judges 4:6 "

Judges 5:25 — He asked water, [and] she gave [him] milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. She gave him milk. — See Judges 4:19 . Butter in a lordly dish. — Butter to eat, as well as milk to drink. Such are the murdering morsels of sin, εχθρων αδωρα δωρα και ιυκ ονησιμα : the giftless gifts of Satan.

3 John 1:4 — I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. I have no greater joy — See Trapp on " 2 John 1:4 " Walk in truth — Not walk to the alehouse, walk about with tales to shed blood, walk after the flesh, as too many of our hearers do, to our singular heartbreak.

1 Samuel 14:5 — The forefront of the one [was] situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah. The fore front. — Heb., The tooth. See 1 Samuel 14:4 . Northward over against Michmash. — So that these rocks were placed on either end of the inlet or passage; and he that would pass must climb over both. Sic petitur caelum.

Behold another man running. — He ran first, but was outrun by Ahimaaz; so was Peter by the beloved disciple. John 20:4 A ready heart maketh riddance.
