(we read of one Faustus, son of Vortigem, king of Britain, who wept out his eyes), or too long looking after the same thing, or on the same object. Ut vehementius vellicet et fodiat inopinatum, ut putabat Iobi, animum
Leviticus 25:43 — Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God. Rule over him with rigour. — As the Egyptians did over the Israelites. Exodus 1:13 Thy servant is made of the same earth with thee, and hath right to the same heaven with thee. See Galatians 3:28 . The servant paid the half shekel as well as the master. Stand not therefore on terms of inequality, but know that yourselves also have

Stand still and I will hear. — Moses was but the echo of God’s voice; John Baptist, "the voice of one crying in the wilderness": St Paul "received of the Lord" what he delivered to the Church, 1 Corinthians 11:23 and took care that the faith of his hearers "might not be in the wisdom of man, but in the power of God." 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 Unwarranted doctrines come not cum gratia et privilegio.
Matthew 16:18 — unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Thou art Peter — i.e. Thou art a living stone in the spiritual temple, like as Peter saith all other Christians are,1 Peter 2:5; 1 Peter 2:5 . And here Christ tells Peter why at first he gave him that name. Upon this rock — That is, upon this thy rocky, thy solid and substantial confession of me. Austin saith, the rock is Christ, not Peter. But this, saith Stapleton,
Acts 28:28 — Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. That the salvation of God — i.e. The gospel, that "grace of God that bringeth salvation," Titus 2:11 , and is the power of God to salvation to as many as believe,Romans 1:16; Romans 1:16 ; therefore called the word of this life, that is able to save souls; and hath heaven in it, potentially, as the kernel hath the tree, or the seed the harvest.
Romans 2:5 — thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Treasurest up unto thyself — Sicut mittentes pecuniam in gazophylacium, quod, ubi iam impletur, confringitur, saith Stella upon Luke. In treasuring, there Isaiah 1:1-31 . Laying in; 2. Lying hidden; 3. Bringing out again, as there is occasion. Wicked persons, while by following their lusts they think they do somewhat to their happiness, shall in the end find, pro thesauro carbones, those burning coals, Psalms
Romans 3:23 — For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; All have sinned — The first man defiled the nature, and ever since the nature defileth the man. Adam was a parent, a public person, a parliament man, as it were; the whole country of mankind was in him, and fell with him. Short of the glory of God — i.e. Of his image now obliterated, or of his kingdom, upon the golden pavement whereof no dirty dog must ever trample. It is an inheritance undefiled, 1 Peter 1:4 .

Raging lust is a great enemy

1 Thessalonians 5:16 — evermore. Rejoice evermore — A duty much pressed in both Testaments, but little practised by many of God’s whinnels, who are ever puling and putting finger in the eye, through one discontent or another. The wicked may not rejoice, Hosea 9:1 ; the saints must,Psalms 32:11; Psalms 32:11 ; Psalms 33:1 , and that continually, striving to a habitual cheerfulness, which occurs when faith heals the conscience, and grace husheth the affections, and composeth all within: what should ail such a
