Psalms 138:4 — as shall read these psalms of my composing; or otherwise shall hear of thy gracious dealing with me, according to thy promise. Such also as shall hereafter be converted to the faith; for though "Not many mighty, not many noble, are called," 1 Corinthians 1:26 , yet some are, and these shine in the Church like stars of the first magnitude.

Psalms 89:3 — I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, I have made a covenant with my chosen — i.e. With Christ (who is God’s elect one, Isaiah 42:1 ), and in him with all his people, Ephesians 1:4 . I have sworn unto David — The father and figure of Christ, who is frequently called David, and is here chiefly to be understood. O happy we, for whose sake God hath sworn! saith Tertullian; and O most wretched, if we believe him not thus swearing!

Psalms 94:11 — vanity. The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity — Or worse; that they are ever weaving spiders’ webs, or else hatching cockatrices’ eggs, Isaiah 59:5 . This sentence St Paul allegeth against the world’s wizards, 1 Corinthians 3:20 , who, the wiser they were the vainer they were, Romans 1:21 . As Austin, writing to a man of great parts, saith, Ornari abs te Diabolus quaerit, The devil would fain be tricked up by thee.

Proverbs 3:23 — — Fiducialiter, saith the Vulgate - confidently and securely. Every malvoy shall be a salvoy to thee: thou shalt ever go under a double guard, the "peace of God" within thee, Philippians 4:7 and the "power of God" without thee. 1 Peter 1:5 "Thou shalt be in league also with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee." Job 5:23

Isaiah 19:16 — fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it. In that day shall Egypt be like unto women. — Feeble and faint-hearted, nihil mascule aut fortiter facturi, sed mulieribus meticulosiores. See Proverbs 28:1 . Isaiah 43:7 — [Even] every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him. Even every one that is called by my name, — i.e., My sons and my daughters, Isaiah 43:6 2 Corinthians 6:18 such as have Christian for their name, and Catholic for their surname. I have created him for my glory. — See on Isaiah 43:1 . Yea, I have made him, — i.e., Advanced him, Feci, i.e., magnum effeci. - Pisc. as 1 Samuel 12:6 .

Jeremiah 10:12 — out the heavens by his discretion. He hath made the earth by his power. — Here we have the true philosophy and right origin of things: Felix qui potuit rerum cognoscere causas. Almighty God made the earth, the main bulk and body of it. Genesis 1:1 He alone is the powerful Creator, the provident Disposer, the prudent Preserver of all things both in heaven and in earth; therefore the only true God.

Jeremiah 16:2 — sign, and in regard of the great calamity impendent, that he is here forbidden marriage, otherwise lawful enough, and in some cases necessary. The contrary doctrine (such as was that of the Tatian heretics and Popish canonists) is a doctrine of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1

Jeremiah 2:1 — Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying. — The prophet being thus called and confirmed, as Jeremiah 1:1-19 sets forthwith upon the work. Jeremiah 27:12 — I spake also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, Bring your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him and his people, and live. Jeremiah 38:4 — Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. For thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war. — Thus out of carnal policy is piety impugned. So 1 Kings 12:27 John 11:48 Jeremiah 38:1 .

Jeremiah 51:5 — sin. — Heb., Guilt, or delinquency, or devastation. The Scripture hath been fully made good to us of this nation, while the fulness of sin in us hath not yet abated the fulness of grace in God toward us. See those four gracious yets, Zechariah 1:17 . See Trapp on " Zechariah 1:17 "

Ezekiel 33:22 — Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb. The hand of the Lord, — i.e., The Spirit of the Lord, which acted me and carried me out. 2 Peter 1:21 1 Corinthians 12:3 And my mouth was opened. — As God had promised. Ezekiel 24:27 And this happened before the messenger’s narration. This was much for the prophet’s honour.

Ezekiel 40:42 — they laid the instruments wherewith they slew the burnt offering and the sacrifice. Wherewith they slew the burnt offering. — The faithful ministers of the do daily execute their priestly offices, and have their instruments according. Matthew 26:2 — Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. Is the feast of the passover — At which feast, Christ our passover was sacrificed for us,1 Corinthians 5:7; 1 Corinthians 5:7 , and we were purchased by his blood, as Israel was typically out of the world by the blood of the paschal lamb; our hearts being sprinkled therewith by the hyssop bunch of faith, from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water, Hebrews 10:22 .

Mark 7:35 — And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. His ears were opened — So are the ears of all that belong to Christ, and their tongues loosed to his praise, which before were bound by Satan. Oh, pray that God would make the bore of our ears as wide as may be, and teach us that "pure language," Zephaniah 3:9 , that our tongues may run "as the pen of a ready writer,"Psalms 45:1; Psalms 45:1 .

Luke 3:27 — Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, Which was the son of Neri — Salathiel was naturally the son of Neri, but legally, and by succession, the son of Jechoniah,Matthew 1:12; Matthew 1:12 , for he succeeded him in the kingdom. Neri, which signifieth my candle, seemeth to have been so named from the candle which the Lord reserved for David and his house, 2 Chronicles 21:7 .
