Genesis 14:11
And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
And all their victuals — "Fulness of bread" Ezekiel 16:49 was a part of their sin; and now "cleanness of teeth" Amos 4:6 is made a piece of their punishment, in God’s just judgment.
Genesis 18:25
That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

Job 26:2
How hast thou helped [him that is] without power? [how] savest thou the arm [that hath] no strength?
How hast thou helped him that is without power? — q.d. Full well hast thou done it, surely. (See a like irony Mark 7:9 1 Corinthians 4:8 ; 1 Corinthians 4:10 ) Thou art a very goodly comforter, and with a great deal of wisdom thou hast framed thy discourse to my present necessity. Thou lookest upon me as a poor, forlorn, strengthless, fruitless creature. Thou shouldest therefore have
Hosea 2:17 will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth — So precise she shall be, so circumspect, according to Exodus 23:13 , that she should spit out of her mouth those dunghill deities with utmost contempt, as David had done before her, Psalms 16:4 . If bodily filthiness may not be once named among Christians, Ephesians 5:3 , why should spiritual? The primitive Christians would not call their days of the week by the heathenish names of Dies Martis, Dies Mercurii, … (as Mercurius Trismegist

There is "a time to keep silence, and a time to speak," Ecclesiastes 3:7 , and it is a singular skill to time a word, Isaiah 50:4 , to set it upon its circumferences, Proverbs 25:11 , so to speak, and so to do, as those that shall be judged by the law of liberty, James 2:12 . He that would be able to speak right and forcible words, must first learn how and when to keep silence.
Amos 9:7 he that feareth God, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him," Acts 10:35 . Unto yourselves indeed you seem some great business, because Israelites; "to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants," Romans 9:4 . To others also you seem a great nation, yea, a wise and understanding people, as having God so nigh unto you and so set for you, Deuteronomy 4:6-7 ; Deuteronomy 33:29 . But tell me, Quis te discrevit? Who made you to differ? and what have ye more

Malachi 3:4 heaven, unless their hearts be first purified by faith. Till then their sacrifices, Romans 12:1 , how specious soever, are neither living (but dead works, as the author to the Hebrews calls it) nor holy, that is, pure and unpolluted, 1 Corinthians 7:34 , unless themselves be partakers of the grace of light, 1 Peter 3:7 , and can boldly say, with David, "Preserve my soul; for I am holy," or one whom thou favourest, Psalms 86:2 ; cf. Psalms 4:3 , he makes this the ground of his hope, that
Acts 18:23
And after he had spent some time there , he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.
Strengthening all the disciples — For as natural life needs nourishing, and young plants watering; so do the saints need confirmation, and Christ hath provided it for them, Luke 22:32 ; Ephesians 4:11-12 .
Acts 25:4
But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither .
That Paul should be kept, … — How easily can God defeat the most cunning contrivances of his Church’s enemies! He sees and smiles, he looks and laughs. Commit we therefore ourselves to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator, 1 Peter 4:19 .
2 Corinthians 13:4
For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
Crucified through weakness — i.e. Ex afflicto eius statu, as Galatians 4:14 ; (Aug.), as having voluntarily subjected himself to all sorts of sufferings for our sakes.
2 Thessalonians 2:16
Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

Hebrews 13:10
We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.
We have an altar — That is, a sacrifice, even Christ our passover, whose flesh is meat indeed, John 6:35 ; John 6:53 , but to believers only, not to those that pertinaciously plead for ceremonies and services of the law, Galatians 5:4 . Hic edere, est credere.
James 4:12
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
There is one lawgiver — What dost thou then do perking into his place, by censuring and defaming another; is not this to be a pope in thine own cause, exalting thyself above God, 2 Thessalonians 2:4 , or at least appealing from him to thyself?
1 John 4:14
And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
And we have seen — sc. By special privilege (that which natural eye never saw, 1 John 4:12 ), the backparts of Jehovah, his wisdom, justice, mercy, …; we can see no more and live, we need see no more that we may live.
3 John 1:14
But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
But I trust — He could promise nothing peremptorily, but submits to God. See Trapp on " James 4:15 "
Face to face — As iron whets iron, so doth the face of a man his friend.
