1 Kings 11:23
And God stirred him up [another] adversary, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah:
And God stirred him up, … — See on 1 Kings 11:14 .
Which fled from his lord Hadadezer. — Whom David had beaten. 2 Samuel 10:18 ; 2 Samuel 8:3-4 False friends will be the causes, but not companions of calamity.
1 Kings 9:5
Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel.
Then will I establish. — See on 1 Kings 2:4 .
For ever. — That is, For a long season; till Shiloh come, and a period be put to the Jewish polity.
1 Chronicles 4:8
And Coz begat Anub, and Zobebah, and the families of Aharhel the son of Harum.
And Coz begat Anub. — Who this Coz was, we read not anywhere: Videntur lacunae quaedam esse in hoc capite. Some think he was one of the sons of Ashur by his wife Helah: though he be not reckoned with the rest. 1 Chronicles 4:7
Psalms 107:2
Let the redeemed of the LORD say [so], whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
Let the redeemed of the Lord — Four sorts of whom are afterwards instanced: 1. exiles; 2. prisoners; 3. sick persons; 4. seamen. These and the like must praise him in a special manner for their deliverance.
From the hand of the enemy — Or, of distress.
Psalms 116:19
In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.
In the courts of the Lord’s house — In coetu sacro; in the great congregation, Psalms 22:25 ; Psalms 35:18 , where there is a more powerful, lively, and effectual working of the Spirit, Psalms 89:7 Hebrews 4:1 1 Corinthians 14:24 .
Psalms 119:53
Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
Horror hath taken hold upon me — Horripilatio, turbo, vortex, a horrible tempest, Psalms 11:6 , such as surpriseth holy Habakkuk, Habakkuk 3:16 .
Because of the wicked — To think of their heinous sins and horrible punishments, which they dread not, dream not off See Daniel 4:19 .
Psalms 124:7
Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Our soul is escaped, … — Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity. See Genesis 22:14 Ezekiel 37:11 2 Kings 19:3-4 .
The snare is broken, … — God hath with as much ease delivered us as a bird net is broken.
Psalms 132:16
I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.
I will also clothe her priests, … — So that they shall save themselves and those that hear them, 1 Timothy 4:16 . Thus God answereth his people’s prayers both for temporals and spirituals; see Psalms 132:9 , and that with an overplus of comfort; they shall shout aloud.
Psalms 142:4
I looked on [my] right hand, and beheld, but [there was] no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
I looked on my right hand — Not a man would appear for me. Aφιλον το δυστυχες , misery is friendless for the most part. See 2 Timothy 4:16 . Nulla fides unquam miseros delegit amicos.
Psalms 78:62
He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
He gave his people also unto the sword — sc. Of the Philistines, who slew thirty thousand of them in one battle, 1 Samuel 4:10 , they lost him and themselves too; the ark having been a far better defence to them than the Palladium to the Trojans.
Psalms 78:64
Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
Their priests fell by the sword — Hophni and Phineas did, 1 Samuel 4:11 , both in one day, as had been foretold, 1 Samuel 2:34 .
And their widows made no lamentation — As being themselves either killed with grief, as Phineas’s wife, or carried captive. Here were ingentia beneficia, flagitia, supplicia.
Jeremiah 29:19
Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending [them]; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.
Because they have not hearkened. — See Jeremiah 7:23 ; Jeremiah 7:26 ; Jeremiah 11:7-8 ; Jeremiah 13:11 ; Jeremiah 17:23 ; Jeremiah 25:4 .
Lamentations 3:12
He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
He hath bent his bow. — Lamentations 2:4 .
And set me as a mark. — Which he is sure to hit. The Benjamites, Judges 20:16 the Parthians, Alcon the Cretan, Domitian the Emperor, were excellent archers; but
“ Non semper feriet quodcunque minabitur arcus; ”
God’s arrow never misseth the mark.
Lamentations 3:2
He hath led me, and brought [me into] darkness, but not [into] light.
He hath led me and brought me into darkness. — Perstat semper in metaphora a pastoritia, say some, who by rod in the foregoing verse understand God’s shepherd’s wand, wherewith, when he is displeased, he driveth his unruly sheep into dark and dangerous places. Psalms 23:3-4 Micah 7:9
Ezekiel 45:16
All the people of the land shall give this oblation for the prince in Israel.
For the prince, — i.e., Upon a levy made by the prince for that purpose. Of these oblations, prefiguring evangelical sacrifices, the use followeth, Ezekiel 46:4 it being first premised what the prince should do over and above these offerings of wheat, barley, oil, and lambs.
Ezekiel 8:9
And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here.
Go in, and behold the wicked abominations. — No words are bad enough for sin. Solomon calleth it "wickedness of folly, even foolishness of madness"; Ecclesiastes 7:25 "mischievous madness"; Ezekiel 10:13 so Luke 16:11 , "mammon of unrighteousness," and "abominable idolatries." 1 Peter 4:3
Luke 5:18
And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
And, behold, men brought — See Trapp on " Matthew 9:2 " See Trapp on " Matthew 9:3 " See Trapp on " Mark 2:3 " See Trapp on " Mark 2:4 " See Trapp on " Mark 2:5 "
John 2:19
Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
Destroy this temple — This was the same in effect with that sign of the prophet Jonah, Matthew 12:39-40 . His resurrection was a plain demonstration of his Deity, Superas evadere ad auras, hic labor, hoc opus est, befitting a God, Romans 1:4 .
Acts 8:34
And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
I pray thee of whom — Incredible gain is to be gotten by conference in all arts; so here. All Christ’s scholars are ζητητικοι , questionists, though, not question sick, as those triflers in Timothy, 1 Timothy 6:4 .
