Psalms 119:144 — The righteousness of thy testimonies [is] everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live. The righteousness of thy testimonies, … — This is the same with Psalms 119:142 . Give me understanding — An ignorant life is a lifeless life. Fuit non vixit. The life of God is the only life. But from this men are alienated by the ignorance that is in them, Ephesians 4:18 .

Isaiah 32:11 — Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird [sackcloth] upon [your] loins. Tremble, ye women. — Adhortatio ad poenitentiam, saith Hyperius; an exhortation to repentance, Trepidate, O tranquillae. - Tremel. not unlike that of St James, James 4:9-10 "Afflict yourselves, and weep and mourn; let your laughter be turned into mourning, your joy into heaviness."

Jeremiah 29:18 — And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them: And will deliver them to be removed. — See Jeremiah 15:4 ; Jeremiah 24:9 .

Ezekiel 24:5 — Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, [and] make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein. Take the choice of the flock. — The king and his peers. And burn also the bones. — The dry bones, the common people, for these will burn like wood. And let him seethe the bones. — The choice bones. Ezekiel 24:4

Ezekiel 37:18 — And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou [meanest] by these? Wilt thou not show us what thou meanest by these? — People, though they should not be question sick, as some in St Paul’s time were, 1 Timothy 6:4 yet they should be inquisitive after truth according to godliness. Titus 1:1

Amos 5:27 — Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name [is] The God of hosts. Therefore will cause you — Idolatry is a land desolating sin. Beyond Damascus — And not only so, but also beyond Babylon, Acts 7:43 , by the way of Damascus, by Tiglathpileser, sent for by Ahaz for that purpose, Isaiah 8:4 2 Kings 15:29 .

Luke 11:27 — And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. Blessed is the womb that bare thee — So the heathen poet, -" qui te genuere beati, Et mater faelix, et quae dedit ubera nutrix. " (Ovid, Metam. lib. 4.)

John 7:27 — Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. No man knoweth whence he is — This error might arise out of some texts of Scripture misunderstood, as Isaiah 53:8 ; Psalms 110:4 . We should, whenever we open the Bible, pray, "Lord, open mine eyes, that I may see the wondrous things of thy law," Psalms 119:18 .
