One that pleads the cause of another. In its technical sense, the office was unknown to the Jews till they became subject to the Romans. It is applied to Christ as our intercessor, 1 John 2:1; compare Romans 8:34 Hebrews 7:25; and to the Holy Spirit, as our teacher and comforter, John 14:16 15:26 .
