Maccabees, Maccabean War

Maccabees was the name given to the family of Mattathias, a faithful priest, who led in a revolt against the Hellenizing influences of the Seleucid King Antiochus Epiphanes in about 168 B.C. See Apocrypha; Intertestamental History.
