Jesuit biblical scholar, born Breyell, Germany, 1830; died, Trier, Germany, 1908. After ordination he became professor of Scripture and Oriental languages at Maria-Laach. From 1872 to 1878 he edited the Jesuit periodical, "Stimmen aus Maria-Laach." His own articles are noted for their clearness, vigor, and classic German style. In 1873 he founded a periodical dealing with the history, geography, and ethnology of the German Catholic missions, and six years later was appointed professor of exegesis at the Gregorian University, Rome, where he began the work on Holy Scripture (Cursus Scripturæ Sacræ) with which his name is associated.
