Comprises that part of the State of Texas situated south and east of Las Beimanas and San Roque Creeks, south of the Nueces River as far as the eastern line of McMullen County, south of Atascosa, Karnes, DeWitt, Victoria, arid Calhoun Counties; area, 22,391 square miles. Elevated to a diocese in 1912 from the Vicariate Apostolic of Brownsville. The Oblate Fathers, notably Father Verdet, were first missionaries of Texas; Father O'Reilly built the first church in Corpus Christi in 1856. Vicars Apostolic of Brownsville: Dominic Manucy, Titular Bishop of Delma (1874-1884); Peter Verdaguer, Titular Bishop of Aulon (1890-1911). Bishops of Corpus Christi: Paul J. Nussbaum (1913-1920); Emmanuel B. Ledvina (1921).
