Martyr, died Cappadocia, 1century. He was the soldier who pierced the side of Christ with his lance, and when the earthquake came he professed the Divinity of Christ. After his conversion, he returned to Cappadocia, where he was put to death by order of Pontius Pilate. The Italian legend, confusing him with Longinus the centurion, states that he brought a relic of the Precious Blood to Mantua, and preached the Gospel there. Represented in arms, standing at the foot of the cross. His relics were preserved in the church of Saint Augustine, Rome. Feast, March 15,.
