Sometimes listed as Martin III. Reigned from 942 to 946. Born Rome; died there. A cardinal, he was one of the popes elected by the influence of Alberic, Prince of the Romans. He was zealous for ecclesiastical reform, and devoted to the poor; he promoted monasticism by his privileges but made little impression on the world as a temporal ruler.
