Comprises the counties of Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and San Luis Obispo. Established on April 27, 1840 as the diocese of Two Californias, Mexico from territory split from the diocese of Sonora. Name changed to the diocese of Monterey on November 20, 1849. Split in July 29, 1853, and its metropolitan changed to the archdiocese of San Francisco. Split, name changed to the diocese of Monterey-Fresno, and metropolitan changed to the archdiocese of Los Angeles on June 1, 1922. Split and name changed to the diocese of Monterey in California on October 6, 1967. See also,
