association of priests established in Paris by the Saint Pierre Julien Eymard, founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1857 he wished to attract the clergy to a more intimate and constant intercourse with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. His plan matured and the association assumed its present form in 1879, received the approval of Pope Leo XIII in 1881, and was canonically erected by Cardinal Parocchi in the Church of Saint Claudio in 1887. Its primary object is the frequent and prolonged worship of the Blessed Sacrament by priests. They must spend one hour a week in adoration; report monthly on a prescribed schedule the performance of the above; apply once a month the indulgences attached to the hour of adoration for the benefit of souls of members who died during the previous month; offer Mass once a year for all deceased members. Repeated failure to send in the report, after due warning, entails loss of membership. The league has spread rapidly throughout the world. The central office is at the house of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, Brussels.
