Founded as the Prefecture Apostolic of Newfoundland on May 30, 1784. Elevated to a Vicariate Apostolic on January 5, 1796. Elevated to the diocese of Newfoundand on June 4, 1847. Name changed to the Diocese of Saint John's on February 29, 1856. Elevated to an archdiocese on February 8, 1904. Suffragan dioceses include
