Reference to the hot east winds which blow across Palestine for days at a time (Deuteronomy 28:22 KJV and RSV; other versions read “blight”). This blasting wind dries up vegetation and ruins crops ( Isaiah 37:27 ; see Psalm 90:5-6 ; Psalm 102:3-4 ; Isaiah 40:6-8 ). This wind represents one of the great natural calamities (1 Kings 8:37 ; 2 Chronicles 6:28 ) and one of the judgments of God upon the disobedient (Deuteronomy 28:22 ; Amos 4:9 ; Haggai 2:17 ).
