(cal' neh) Place name of uncertain meaning. 1. A part of kingdom of Nimrod in Babylonia (Genesis 10:10 ). The location or identity with any other recorded city is not known. 2. City in Syria under Israel's control in the days of Amos and Isaiah (around 740 B.C.). Amos invited Israel to view Calneh's fate as a conquered city and see if Israel was really better in any way (Amos 6:2 ). Similarly, Isaiah warned Jerusalem that Calno (another spelling of Calneh) was as good as Jerusalem and yet had suffered conquest by Tiglath-Pileser of Assyria in 738. This Calneh may be modern Kullan Koy in northern Syria, six miles from Arpad.
