Monastery of the Benedictine Order in Lincolnshire, founded in the 8th century by Ethelbald, King of Mercia, in honor of Saint Guthlac. It was detroyed by the Danes, 866, rebuilt about the middle of the 10th century, but subsequently destroyed twice by fire. Rebuilt again at the end of the 12th century, it flourished until the 16th when the abbot, with his 27 monks subscribed to the royal supremacy, 1534, and surrendered the abbey to the king, 1539. Its existing remains are still used as an Anglican parish church.
