Religious fanatic and self-styled prophet, born in 1750 in Gittisham, England; died in 1814 in London, England. Originally a Methodist, she became convinced that in herself were lodged supernatural gifts, so she composed rhymed prophecies and declared herself the "woman clothed in the sun" mentioned in Apocalypse 12. Coming to London, she commenced to "seal" the 144,000 elect. She claimed that on a certain date she would be delivered of Shiloh, but this failed to occur and she was declared in a trance. More than 100,000 disciples followed her teachings until the close of the 19th century. Among her writings are Strange Effects of Faith, Free Exposition of the Bible, and The Book of Wonders.
