E.N.E. of Tuxtla Gutierrez. Pop. (1892 estimate) 16,000. The surrounding country is fertile and healthful and is populated chiefly with Indians. It was the capital of Chiapas until near the end of the 19th century. There are traces of an early Indian civilization in the vicinity.
