An Italian rabbi of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; known as the author of a translation into Judæo-Spanish (but in Latin characters) of the ShulḦan 'Aruk under the title "Libro de Mantenimiento de la Alma," Salonica, 1568; Venice, 1609 and 1713. It was written for the use of the Maranos who could not read Hebrew. According to Steinschneider, Altaras was merely the patron of the work, which was actually written by a man named Meir, otherwise unknown.
