Rabbi at Cape Town, South Africa; born at Dublin, Ireland, 1863; educated by his father, Rev. Philipp Bender, for many years rabbi of the Dublin congregation. Bender finished his education at St. John's College, Cambridge, Eng., and in 1891 was appointed rabbi of the Hebrew congregation at Cape Town, South Africa, where he continues to reside (1901). He is professor of Hebrew at the South African College, and is a member of the council of the University of Good Hope. Bender is connected with many local philanthropic institutions besides those of his own congregation. He has contributed to the "Jewish Quarterly Review" (vols. , ) a series of papers on the burial customs of the Jews.
