Russian merchant; born on the confines of Russia and Rumania; died 1895. He followed the army in the Crimea (1856-57) as a sutler, and there acquired wealth, which he afterward greatly increased in Burma. He had settled in Turkey after the war, and reached Burma through Persia. In Burma he superintended for King The-baw some of the large transactions in timber-cutting by which the king was enriched. Goldenberg afterward resided for a time in Vienna and Wiesbaden. By his will, made in England, he left the greater part of his fortune of £160,000 ($800,000) to six London charities and hospitals.
