Hassler, Simon
The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia
or American musician; born in Bavaria July 25, 1832; died in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 25, 1901; son of Henry Hassler, also a musician, who, with his family, emigrated to the United States in 1842. Simon received a sound musical education, and in 1852 made his first public appearance as a violinist. He became a member of the orchestra which his father had established in Philadelphia, and later succeeded to its leadership. From 1865 to 1872 he was leader of the orchestra at the Walnut Street Theater in the same city, and subsequently of the Chestnut Street Theater and of the Chestnut Street Opera-House. He was chosen to direct the orchestra at the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia in 1876, and conducted at many festivals.
Hassler composed music for Shakespeare's plays, numerous marches, and other orchestral pieces.
