American naval engineer; born at Cincinnati, Ohio, June 8, 1860. He was educated at the College of the City of New York, graduating in 1877; in that year he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, from which he graduated in 1881. In 1883 he became commissioned assistant engineer; in 1894 passed assistant engineer; in 1889 lieutenant; and in 1903 lieutenant-commander. At present (1904) he holds the position of chief engineer of the U. S. S. "Alabama." In 1900 he was commended for gallant conduct while serving with the U. S. S. "Yosemite," which was wrecked in a typhoon off Guam, in the Pacific.
