German financier; born at Laupheim in 1835; died at Stuttgart Sept. 24, 1903. At first attorney at law, he rose to the leadership of Württemberg finance as president of the Württemberg'sche Vereinsbank. He was also founder (1871) of the Württemberg'sche Notenbank. Steiner was a patron of science and art and an intimate friend of Berthold Auerbach. In recognition of the part he took in the foundation of the Schwäbische Schillerverein and the Schiller-Museum in Marbach he was made an honorary citizen of Schiller's birthplace.
