ἀσύνθετος, ἄσπονδος.

These words are quite similar in their effects, but opposite in their conception. ἀσύνθετος, occurring only in Romans 1:31, is covenant-breaker, one who interrupts a state of peace and brings on war by disregarding an agreement by which peace is maintained. ἄσπονδος is implacable, one who refuses to agree to any terms or suggestions of peace. It implies a state of war, and a refusal of covenant or even of armistice to end it permanently or temporarily. In the N.T. use both words probably refer not to war in the strict sense so much as to discord and strife.
