ἀναθεμᾰ-τίζω, devote to evil, LXX Numbers 21:2, John 6:20, al., Tab.Defix. Aud. 41 A, Cod.Just.; ἀναθέματι ἀ. LXX Deuteronomy 13:15; but ἀναθέματι ἀ. ἑαυτούς bind themselves by a curse, c. inf., Acts 23:14 :

1. Pass., to be devoted to evil, LXX Numbers 18:14.

II intr., curse and swear, Mark 14:71.

to devote to destruction, declare or invoke anathema: absol., Mark 14:71; ἐαντόν , to bind oneself under a curse: Acts 23:12; Acts 23:14; Acts 23:21 (Cf. καταναθεματίζω , and on the occurrence of the word in Papyri, v. Deiss., LAE, 92 f.; MM, VGT, s.v.).†

The form may be illustrated by ἐκθεματίζω in P Tebt I. 27.108 (B.C. 113) ἐκθεματισθῆι, ";be proclaimed a defaulter."; There is also a simplex in BGU IV. 1127.30 (B.C. 18) ἐξῖναι τῷ Εὐαγγέλωι θεματίσαντι ἐπὶ τράπεζαν ἔνθεσμον. . . παραχώρησιν ποιεῖσθαι, Syll 329.56 (i/B.C.), meaning ";to deposit.";
