חַוְרָן [Hauran], pr.n. of a region beyond Jordan, situated eastward of Gaulanitis (גּוֹלָן) and Batanæa, and to the west of Trachonitis (now el Lejah), extending from Jabbok to the territory of Damascus, Ezekiel 47:16, 18 Ezekiel 47:18Gr. Αὐρανῖτις, Ὠρανῖτις; Arabic حَوْرَانُ. It undoubtedly takes its name from the number of its caverns (חוֹר), in which even now the inhabitants of the region dwell.
