Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נִבְחַז [Nibhaz], pr.n. of an idol of the Avites, 2 Kings 17:31, which, according to the Hebrew interpreters, had the figure of a dog; in this they probably make a conjecture, deriving it from the root נבח, although there are actually some traces of the worship of an idol in Syria in the figure of a dog, see Ikenii Dissert. de Idolo Nibchas in ejus Dissertt. Bremæ 1749, editis, p. 143, seqq. In the books of the Sabæans נבאז (the identity of which with נבחז, may be doubted), is the lord of Darkness, evil demon, see Norbergii Ohomast. cod. Nasar. p. 100.
