I frame laws, Lys. 15.9, Pl. R. 534d, etc.; Λακεδαιμονίοις X. Revelation 15:1-8; ταῖς μοναρχίαις Isoc. 2.8; περί τινος Id. 11.40; περί τινων Arist. Pol. 1294a37; ὑπὲρ ὅλου τοῦ ἐμπορίου D. 56.48: — Med., frame laws for oneself, Pl. R. 398b, Tht. 177e, etc.: — Pass., of a state, to be furnished with laws, have a code of laws, Id. Lg. 701d, 962e, cf. Hebrews 7:11.
II ordain by law, τι Pl. Lg. 628d, R. 417b; ἐναντία τῷ ὅρκῳ τοῦ δήμου ν. And. 4.3: c. inf., enact, τῶν ζῴων ἐστὶν ἃ σέβεσθαι ἐνομοθέτησε Isoc. 11.26, cf. POxy. 1119.16 (iii A.D.): — in Med., Pl. Lg. 736c: — Pass., to be ordained by law, Hebrews 8:6; τὰ καλῶς νενομοθετημένα ἡμῖν ὑπὸ τῶν βασιλέων OGI 329.13 (Aegina, ii B.C.), cf. Luc. Pr.Im. 18: impers., περὶ ταῦτα οὕτω σφι νενομοθέτηται it has been so ordained by law, Hdt. 2.41; ν. καλὸν [εἶναι] τὸ χαρίζεσθαι Pl. Smp. 182b; ἦν νενομοθετημένον Arist. Pol. 1319a11.
νομοθετέω, νομοθέτω: passive, perfect 3 person singular νενομοθέτηται; pluperfect 3 person singular νενομοθέτητο (on the omission of the augment see Winers Grammar, 72 (70); Buttmann, 33 (29)); (νομοθέτης); from (Lysias), Xenophon, and Plato down; the Sept. several times for הורָה;
1. to enact laws; passive laws are enacted or prescribed for one, to be legislated for, furnished with laws (often so in Plato; cf. Ast, Platonic Lexicon, ii., p. 391 (for examples)); ὁ λαός ἐπ' αὐτῆς (R G ἐπ' αὐτῇ) νενομοθέτηται (R G νενομοθέτητο) the people received the Mosaic law established upon the foundation of the priesthood, Hebrews 7:11 (Winers Grammar, § 39, 1 b.; cf. Buttmann, 337 (290); many refer this example (with the genitive) to time (A. V. under it); see ἐπί, A. II.,cf. B. 2 a. γ.).
2. to sanction by law, enact: τί, passive Hebrews 8:6 (cf. Winers Grammar, and Buttmann, as above).

This NT ἅπ. εἰρ. (James 5:1) occurs in the curious spell for transforming a goddess into the appearance of an old woman, P Lond 125 verso.30 (V/A.D.) (= I. p. 124) ὀλολύξασ᾽ ἡ γραῦς φεύξεται ὅπως μὴ εὐκόλως αὐτὴν ἀπολύσῃς. For the subst. see P Leid Wxxi. 30 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 155) ἔσω προσβαλόμενος μύκησαι ὀλολυγμός (l. –μόν), P Lond 121.323 (iii/A.D.) (=1. p. 94) μὴ φωνὴ μὴ ὀλολυγμὸς μὴ σιυριγμός (l. συριγμός), and .769 (p. 109). For the adj. ὀλολυγαῖος see Kaibel 546.6 (Imperial) ὀλολυγαία νυκτερίς, ";a howling bat,"; and for ὀλολύκτρια (not in LS) applied to a woman ";crying aloud"; at a sacrifice see Syll 566 (=.3982).35 (ii/B.C.). The words are onomatopoetic : cf. ὑλακτέω, Lat. ululare.
