חוּר an unused root, the meaning of which was that of hollowing, boring, as shewn by the derivatives חוֹר, חוּר No. II, a hole, a cavern, and the proper names חֹרִי, חַוְרָן; compare some of the derivatives of the root خار, as خَوْرَانُ foramen ani, خَوْرُ the mouth of a river, bay of the sea. Kindred roots are כּוּר and غَارَ; whence מְעוּרָה, مَغَارَةُ, غَارُ a cavern.

I. חוּר & חֻר m. white and fine linen, from the root חָוַר. LXX. βύσσος. Esther 1:6, 8:15.

II. חוּר m.

(1) i.q. חוֹר No. II, a hole, as that of a viper, Isaiah 11:8 used of an abominable subterranean prison (Germ. Loch), Isaiah 42:22. Root חוּר No. II.

(2) [Hur], pr.n. of several men

(a) of a Midianite king, Numbers 31:8; Joshua 13:21.

(b) of the husband of Miriam, the sister of Moses, [on what authority does this description of Hur rest?], Exodus 17:10, 24:14.

(c) 1 Chronicles 2:19, 50 1 Chronicles 2:50, 4:1, 1 Chronicles 4:4 compare 1 Chronicles 2:20; Exodus 31:2.

(d) Nehemiah 3:9.

(e) 1 Kings 4:8.

I. חוֹר i.q. חוּר No. I, white linen. Pl. חֹרַי (poet. for חֹרִים) cloths of linen or byssus, Isaiah 19:9. Allied to this are Arab. حَرِيرُ white silk, Ethiopic ሐሪር፡ cotton, according to Ludolf. Lex. Ethiop. page 36. Root חָוַר.

II. חוֹר m.

(1)  a hole, 2 Kings 12:10 used of a window, [Is not this rather, a hole in a door?], Song of Solomon 5:4 of the cavity of the eye, Zechariah 14:12.

(2) a cavern, Job 30:6; 1 Samuel 14:11 of a den of wild beasts, Nahum 2:13. Root חוּר.
