1 priest in Saul's (David's) time 1 Samuel 21:2 (twice in verse); 1 Samuel 21:3; 1 Samuel 21:9; 1 Samuel 22:14,16 (אֲחִימֶ֑לֶךְ 1 Chronicles 24:31; Psalm 52:2 = (title); son of Ahitub 1 Samuel 22:9,11 (compare12); 1 Samuel 22:20; father of Abiathar 1 Samuel 23:6; 1 Samuel 30:7; so also 2 Samuel 8:17 ᵑ6 Ew We Th Dr; where ᵑ0׳בןאֿביתר אחימ; whence id. wrongly 1 Chronicles 24:6, compare 1 Chronicles 24:4 (מִבְּנֵי אִיתָמָר׳אֲח) & 1 Chronicles 18:16 (where read ׳אֲח for ׳אֲב).

אֲחִימֶלֶךְ (“brother of the king”), [Ahimelech], pr.n.

(1) a priest living ar Nob, the father of Abiathar, the intimate friend of David (1 Samuel 21:2, 20:9 Psalms 52:2), and therefore slain by Saul. Different from this apparently may be

(2)  Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, one of the two high priests in the time of David, 2 Samuel 8:17; 1 Chronicles 24:3, 1 Chronicles 24:6, 31 1 Chronicles 24:31. Korb, however (Winer Theol. Journal IV. p. 295), supposes, with a great deal of probability, that in 2 Samuel 8:17, for “Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar,” we should read, “Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech;” from this erroneous reading he supposes that a mistake was introduced into the Chronicles.
