Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

גָּדָה an unused root, which had the sense of cutting, cutting off, and plucking away, like the kindred גָּדַד, which see. Hence גְּדִי a kid, so called from cropping, and

גָּדָה or גֵּדָה pl. constr. גְּדוֹת banks (of a river), Joshua 3:15, 4:18 Isaiah 8:7, so called because they are torn away and broken down by the water. Comp. גָּרַף and חוֹף حَاقَّةُ shore, from חָפַף to rub away, to wash off, جَلَمَةُ bank, form جلم to cut off (whence also, جَلَمُ a kid), comp. Gr. ἀκτή́, ἀγή, from ἄγνυμι, ῥηγμίν, ῥαχία, from ῥήγνυμι. (Chald. גּוּדָא wall, stone wall, also bank, as if wall of the sea. Arab. جَدُّ shore, also called from the idea of cutting off.)
