עַמּוֹן (i.q. בֶּן־עַמִּי, as is stated, Genesis 19:38, that is, son of my relative, or kindred, i.e. born from incest; from the noun עָם which see No. 1; with the addition of the syllable וֹן, like קַדְמוֹן from קֶדֶם; רִאשׁוֹן from רֹאשׁ) Ammon, pr.n. of a man; the son of Lot by his younger daughter, Genesis 19:30, seqq.; hence of the nation of Ammonites, who were descended from him; who inhabited the land beyond Jordan between the rivers Jabbok and Arnon, 1 Samuel 11:11 more frequently called בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן Numbers 21:24; Deuteronomy 2:37, 3:16. -Eze. 25:25 בְּנֵי־עַמּוֹן is used for אֶרֶץ בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן, as in Lat. in Bruttios, Samnites profectus est, i.e. into their territories.
