		Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition
אֶרְאֵל probably i.q. אֲרִיאֵל lion of God, hero. Hence
(a) אַרְאֵלִי (“sprung from a hero,” “son of a hero”), [Areli], pr.n.m., Genesis 46:16 [and patron.] Numbers 26:17.
(b) a difficult word אֶרְאֶלָּם Isaiah 33:7, “their hero,” or rather collectively, “their heroes,” sc. of Israel, in which interpretation nothing need be changed, but Dagesh being removed from the letter ל (אֶרְאֵלָם). The common reading with Dagesh has doubtless arisen from another interpretation adopted anciently; by which אראלם was regarded as contracted from אֶרְאֶה־לָהֶם, אֶרְאֶה־לָּם; See Symm., Theod., Chald., Jerome; comp. my Comment. on Isa. loc. cit. [“and Thes.pp.146, 1248”].
