Job 1,2

Job's Character and Wealth

1 There was a man in the (C1)land of Uz whose name was (C2)Job; and that man was (C3)blameless, upright, (C4)fearing God and (C5)turning away from evil.2 (C1)Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.3 (C1)His possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was (C2)the greatest of all the (F1)men of the east.4 His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send word and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.5 When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send word to them and consecrate them, getting up early in the morning and offering (C1)burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "(C2)Perhaps my sons have sinned and (C3)cursed God in their hearts." Job did so continually.

6 (C1)Now there was a day when the (F1)(C2)sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and (F2)Satan also came among them.7 The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Satan answered the LORD and said, "(C1)From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."8 The LORD said to Satan, "Have you (F1)considered (C1)My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, (C2)a blameless and upright man, (F2)fearing God and turning away from evil."9 Then (C1)Satan answered the (F1)LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?10 "(C1)Have You not made a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? (C2)You have blessed the work of his hands, and his (C3)possessions have increased in the land.11 "(C1)But reach out with Your hand now and (C2)touch all that he has; he will certainly curse You to Your face."12 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your (F1)power; only do not reach out and put your hand on him." So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

13 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the female donkeys feeding beside them,15 and (F1)the (C1)Sabeans (F2)attacked and took them. They also (F3)killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and (F4)I alone have escaped to tell you."16 While he was still speaking, another came and said, "(C1)The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."17 While he was still speaking, another came and said, "The (C1)Chaldeans formed three units and made a raid on the camels and took them, and (F1)killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

20 Then Job got up, (C1)tore his robe, and shaved his head; then he fell to the ground and worshiped.21 He said,

"(C1)Naked I came from my mother's womb,
And naked I shall return there.
The (C2)LORD gave and the LORD has taken away.
Blessed be the name of the LORD."

22 (C1)Despite all this, Job did not sin, nor did he (F1)blame God.

Job Loses His Health

1 (C1)Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and (F1)Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.2 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."3 The LORD said to Satan, "Have you (F1)considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man (F2)fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still (C1)holds firm to his integrity, although you incited Me against him to (F3)ruin him without cause."4 Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has, he will give for his life.5 "(C1)However, reach out with Your hand now, and (C2)touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face!"6 So the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your (F1)power, only spare his life."

7 Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with (C1)severe boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.8 And Job took a piece of pottery to scrape himself while (C1)he was sitting in the ashes.

9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold firm your integrity? Curse God and die!"10 But he said to her, "You are speaking as one of the foolish women speaks. (C1)Shall we actually accept good from God but not accept adversity?" (C2)Despite all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

11 Now when Job's three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place—Eliphaz the (C1)Temanite, Bildad the (C2)Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to (C3)sympathize with him and comfort him.12 When they (F1)looked from a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them (C1)tore his robe, and they (C2)threw dust over their heads toward the sky.13 (C1)Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

Matthew 7

Chapter 7

Judging Others

1 "(C1)Do not (F1)judge, so that you will not be judged.2 "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and (F1)(C1)by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.3 "Why do you (C1)look at the (F1)speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?4 "(C1)Or how (F1)can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the (F2)speck out of your eye,' and look, the log is in your own eye?5 "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the (F1)speck out of your brother's eye!

6 "(C1)Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

Prayer and the Golden Rule

7 "(F1)(C1)Ask, and (C2)it will be given to you; (F2)seek, and you will find; (F3)knock, and it will be opened to you.8 "For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.9 "Or what person is there among you (F1)who, when his son asks for a loaf of bread, (F2)will give him a stone?10 "Or (F1)if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he?11 "So if you, despite being (F1)evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, (C1)how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

12 "In everything, (C1)therefore, (F1)treat people the same way you want (F2)them to treat you, for (C2)this is the Law and the Prophets.

The Narrow and Wide Gates

13 "(C1)Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.14 "For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 "Beware of the (C1)false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are (C2)ravenous wolves.16 "You will (F1)(C1)know them by their fruits. (F2)Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they?17 "So (C1)every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.18 "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.19 "(C1)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.20 "So then, you will (F1)know them (C1)by their fruits.

21 "(C1)Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.22 "(C1)Many will say to Me on (C2)that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many (F1)miracles?'23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; (C1)LEAVE ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

The Two Foundations

24 "Therefore, (C1)everyone who hears these words of Mine, and (F1)acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.25 "And the rain fell and the (F1)floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.26 "And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not (F1)act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.27 "And the rain fell and the (F1)floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great."

28 (F1)(C1)When Jesus had finished these words, (C2)the crowds were amazed at His teaching;29 for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
