Genesis 17

Chapter 17

Abraham and the Covenant of Circumcision

1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, (C1)the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him,

"I am (F1)God (C2)Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be (F2)(C3)blameless.

2 "I will (F1)make My (C1)covenant between Me and you,
And I will (C2)multiply you exceedingly."

3 Abram (C1)fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,

4 "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you will be the father of a (C1)multitude of nations.

5 "No longer shall you be named (F1)Abram,
But (C1)your name shall be (F2)Abraham;
For (C2)I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

6 "I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and (C1)kings will come from you.7 "I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your (F1)descendants after you throughout their generations as an (C1)everlasting covenant, (C2)to be God to you and (C3)to your (F1)descendants after you.8 "And (C1)I will give to you and to your (F1)descendants after you the land where you live as a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and (C2)I will be their God."

9 God said further to Abraham, "Now as for you, (C1)you shall keep My covenant, you and your (F1)descendants after you throughout their generations.10 "(C1)This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your (F1)descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.11 "And (C1)you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.12 "And every male among you who is (C1)eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, including a slave who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your (F1)descendants.13 "A slave who is born in your house or (C1)who is bought with your money shall certainly be circumcised; so My covenant shall be in your flesh as an everlasting covenant.14 "But as for an uncircumcised male, one who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be (C1)cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant."

15 Then God said to Abraham, "As for your wife Sarai, you shall not call her by the name (F1)Sarai, but (F2)Sarah shall be her name.16 "I will bless her, and indeed I will give you (C1)a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; (C2)kings of peoples will (F1)come from her."17 Then Abraham (C1)fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to a man a hundred years old? And (C2)will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth to a child?"18 And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before You!"19 But God said, "No, but your wife Sarah will bear you (C1)a son, and you shall name him (F1)Isaac; and (C2)I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his (F2)descendants after him.20 "As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and (C1)make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly. (C2)He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him into a (C3)great nation.21 "But I will establish My covenant with (C1)Isaac, whom (C2)Sarah will bear to you at this season next year."22 When He finished talking with him, (C1)God went up from Abraham.

23 Then Abraham took his son Ishmael, and all the slaves who were (C1)born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on this very same day, (C2)as God had said to him.24 Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when (C1)he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.25 And his son (C1)Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.26 On this very same day Abraham was circumcised, as well as his son Ishmael.27 And all the men of his household, those who were (C1)born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

Psalms 10

Chapter 10

A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.

1 Why (C1)do You stand far away, LORD?
Why (C2)do You hide (F1)Yourself in times of trouble?

2 In (C1)arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the needy;
(F1)Let them be (C2)caught in the plots which they have devised.

3 For the wicked (C1)boasts of his (C2)soul's desire,
And (F1)the greedy person curses and (C3)shows disrespect to the LORD.

4 The wicked, (F1)in his haughtiness, (C1)does not seek Him.
(C2)There is no God in all his schemes.

5 His ways (C1)succeed at all times;
Yet Your judgments are on high, (C2)out of his sight;
As for all his enemies, he snorts at them.

6 He says to himself, "(C1)I will not be moved;
(F1)Throughout the generations (C2)I will not be in adversity."

7 His (C1)mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and (C2)oppression;
(C3)Under his tongue is harm and injustice.

8 He sits in the (C1)lurking places of the villages;
He (C2)kills the innocent in the secret places;
His eyes (F1)surreptitiously watch for the (F2)(C3)unfortunate.

9 He lurks in secret like (C1)a lion in his (F1)lair;
He (C2)lurks to catch (C3)the needy;
He catches the needy when he pulls him into his (C4)net.

10 Then he crushes the needy one, who cowers;
And (F1)unfortunate people fall by his mighty power.

11 He (C1)says to himself, "God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it."

12 Arise, LORD; God, (C1)lift up Your hand.
(C2)Do not forget the humble.

13 Why has the wicked (C1)treated God disrespectfully?
He has said to himself, "(F1)You will not require an account."

14 You have seen it, for You have looked at (C1)harm and provocation to (F1)take it into Your hand.
The (F2)(C2)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (C3)helper of the orphan.

15 (C1)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
(F1)(C2)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.

16 The LORD is (C1)King forever and ever;
(C2)Nations have perished from His land.

17 LORD, You have heard the (C1)desire of the humble;
You will (C2)strengthen their heart, (C3)You will make Your ear attentive

18 To (F1)vindicate the (C1)orphan and the (C2)oppressed,
So that mankind, which is of the earth, will no longer cause (C3)terror.

Luke 10:1-20

Chapter 10

The Seventy-two Sent Out

1 Now after this (C1)the Lord appointed (F1)seventy-two (C2)others, and sent them (C3)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.2 And He was saying to them, "(C1)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore plead with the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.3 "Go; (C1)behold, I am sending you out like lambs in the midst of wolves.4 "(C1)Carry no money belt, no (F1)bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way.5 "And whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace be to this house.'6 "And if a (F1)man of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you.7 "Stay in (F1)that house, eating and drinking (F2)what they provide; for (C1)the laborer is deserving of his wages. Do not move from house to house.8 "Whatever city you enter and they receive you, (C1)eat what is served to you;9 and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, '(C1)The kingdom of God has come near to you.'10 "But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,11 '(C1)Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet (F1)be sure of this, that (C2)the kingdom of God has come near.'12 "I say to you, (C1)it will be more tolerable on that day for (C2)Sodom than for that city.

13 "(C1)Woe to you, (C2)Chorazin! Woe to you, (C2)Bethsaida! For if the (F1)miracles that occurred in you had occurred in (C2)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in (F2)(C3)sackcloth and ashes.14 "But it will be more tolerable for (C1)Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.15 "And you, (C1)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!

16 "(C1)The one who listens to you listens to Me, and (C2)the one who rejects you rejects Me; but the one who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me."

The Joyful Results

17 Now the (F1)seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even (C1)the demons are subject to us (F2)in Your name!"18 And He said to them, "I watched (C1)Satan fall from heaven like lightning.19 "Behold, I have given you authority to (C1)walk on snakes and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.20 "Nevertheless, do not (F1)rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that (C1)your names are recorded in heaven."<
